We loved our special day and getting married in Powhatan, VA! The weather is unpredictable in March for a wedding, but it is also not the most popular time of year to marry so you aren't competing with others for your vendors. Wedding Mapper was a good resource and I really liked the product they created. I used it as an insert in our wedding invitations.
I chose Tim because I saw his work at a friend's house. He is natural and has an artistic flare to his work. He was always a pleasure to work with. His strength is informal photos, but when paired with a second shooter who does formals, they made a really good pair. He is affordable and has better rates than most other photographers I considered, but does not have as much experience. Sometimes he was not prompt in replying to my emails. I still would recommend him for those who are looking for more affordable photography.
Tom of ECE dressed my husband and all the men in our wedding party. He met us in person and provided several suits to chose from. He made personal recommendations when we had difficulty making decisions. He does the fittings himself for those who are local. If you're not local, he gives directions on how to handle fittings and subsequent alterations. He provides quality suits for affordable prices. We didn't want to rent tuxes for our wedding. The men in our wedding party paid slightly more than they would have for a rental, but were able to go home with a suit. Tom also handled shirts and ties. He even had a small tie custom made for my ring bearer so he could match the other men in the wedding party. Tom is very accommodating and very easy to work with!
I usually don't like the taste of wedding cake and skip on eating it at weddings. I was able to go for a private tasting with Pierre and talk with him about what I wanted for my cake design. I really thought the cake was delicious and I've heard from my guests that it was one of the best wedding cakes they've tasted. Choosing my wedding cake was one of the easiest decisions I made during my wedding planning.
I hired Susan's jazz trio for my reception entertainment. I found her on Gig Masters' website. She is based in MD. She and her trio are very talented. They were flexible by learning new songs not already in their repertoire and even worked with my soloists we added last minute for special songs. They were very professional and created a wonderful atmosphere for our reception.
David and Rebekah did a wonderful job with the ceremony music. David was on guitar and Rebekah sang and was on piano. They learned all of the songs I requested for my ceremony and provided 30 mins of prelude music. They coordinated well with friends who sang solos during the ceremony by practicing with those who were local in advance and then sending recordings to those who weren't local so they could practice. They worked well with my sound guy and overall were a pleasure to work with.
I wanted a black choir to sing my recessional song. BAC is a choir of students from VCU. They are very talented and were willing to learn the song I wanted them to sing even though it wasn't already in their repertoire. They were a surprise for my guests and started singing after we were pronounced husband and wife.
Great atmosphere and great food! Can be pricey though. My mother-in-law planned the rehearsal dinner from a distance (she isn't local). Staff at Ruth's Chris made it easy for her to coordinate everything ahead of time and on the day of the rehearsal dinner. The wait staff was really great. They were very helpful with our elderly guests (my grandparents) and even noticed how my grandmother really enjoyed the crab cakes for appetizers. They bagged a few for her and gave them to her (without her asking) to take when she left.
The Mill has received awards from The Knot for multiple years as a wedding venue. I loved the setting... perfect for either an outdoor or indoor ceremony and indoor reception. It was nice to have both the ceremony and reception in one place so my guests did not have to travel between sites. They are extremely flexible and agreed to set up for my ceremony on the day of the wedding as I waited to make a decision due to weather about indoor or outdoor. They also have a room to use as a nursery for babies or infants. My guests have told me over and over what a wonderful venue it was! It is a place I would love to just go back and visit. Very serene and peaceful. Lisa & Colleen are wonderful to work with and provided prompt replies to all my inquiries. They have an exclusive caterer when you contract for this venue, but don't worry... the food is excellent! I was even invited for a group tasting before selecting my menu. Lisa is a wonderful caterer and provides a unique twist on her recipes to make your selections more exquisite.
Only a few of our guests stayed here. I haven't heard enough feedback to provide a rating.
Incredible service and hospitality! They were so accommodating to us. Even packed each of my guests snack bags at breakfast for them to take for the day. They also packed some to-go breakfast bags for us the morning of our wedding when we were scrambling last minute to get something for the bridal party. I can't say enough about this Hampton Inn!
