Our wedding was exactly what we wanted: spiritual, light hearted and fun. we had a traditional jewish wedding at the hellenic centre in vancouver, BC complete with tischen, bedekken, chuppah and "schtick" at the reception. we chose to have a kosher caterer and served a vegetarian meal. the catering team we hired had just begun their catering careers. because of this, the food was excellent, but there were a few glitches in the kitchen. HOWEVER, their rates were the best in the city, and everyone eventually got fed.
our photographer was excellent, the desserts were great, our decorator did an amazing job.
they played great music and had a great selection of hora songs. we had some problems with them in terms of following our requests. we had specifically asked they start their first set with a group of upbeat songs and they completely ignored (or forgot) that request. other than that, they played a great selection of songs and kept everyong, young and old, dancing all night.
Cathy is a consumate professional, and has been doing wedding decor for decades. she is efficient, reliable, and her rates are reasonable as well. we hired her at the suggestion of our venue, as she has worked there many times before. she had also done decor for several jewish weddings in the past, which was important for us. she has worked everywhere in the city, and i highly highly highly recommend her.
We hired Essy and Mike because their food was delicious and their price was right. They are just starting their careers as caterers, and ours was their first large-scale buffet event, with 205 guests. if you are having an event for less than 100 people i highly highly highly recommend them. if you're hiring them for more than 100 i also recomend them, but also suggest you be prepared for some learners' mistakes from them as they are just getting started. however, their prices are relatively low because they are new, and they will work extremely hard for you.
we hired naomi as DOC when we realized we could not run the day of the wedding ourselves. this was her first wedding coordination gig, and she did an amazing job. she was discreet, firm, able to make decisions in the moment, and we have absolutely no idea what she had to do to make our day perfect. now THAT's professionalism. we met two or three times before the wedding to go over the details, and also did a walk through of the venue together a few weeks before. she also had a black belt in karate, which made us feel like she could handle herself with our rowdy families! naomi has coordinated other events in the past, but this was her first wedding coordination, and she did a great job.
we chose the hellenic centre because we were able to bring in our own caterer and alcohol, and because they were large enough to house both our ceremony and reception. the staff were excellent and responsive to our requests, within reason of course. when dealing with venues like this it's important to remember "it's not a hotel." the space is not perfect or beautiful the way a more expensive location would be BUT, the price was right, and we hired a decorator (Cathy Dounis) who was familiar with the space and transformed it into a beautiful party space for us. we saved tens of thousands of dollars and had the wedding of our dreams.
