Crystal and Douglas's Wedding

Roanoke, VA, in late October is a great time/place to get married! The temperature suites everyone (not too hot, not too cold) and the leaves are starting to change which provides great scenery. Roanoke is very easy to get around so your guests won't get too lost, yet there is plenty to do, so they won't get bored either. We were able to find spaces and vendors to accommodate almost any style of wedding you'd like to have.

Sassy Clipper Hair Salon
Roanoke, VA
Wedding Day Beauty

Our wedding was out of town for us so the bride had some trouble finding a salon. She was reffered to some high end salons by family, but she wasn't looking for a formal up-do or to spend a ton on her wedding hair. She found Sassy Clipper Salon via an online search and booked her day-of and hair trial. The women who work here are great! They're very relaxed and create a great environment where you can just hang out while getting your hair done (and at a great price!) Whether you're looking for wedding hair or just a regular place to go, check out Sassy Clipper.

Wedding Fashion

This was only the second place I had visited to start my dress search. I went in simply to find which styles worked and which didn't. We weren't expecting to find THE dress! The associates were very helpful and provide a great experience. The only reason I found my dress was an associate pulling two dresses that had everything that I didn't want (toward the end of the appointment). The last of the two I tried on ended being THE dress. I purchased my dress a year before the wedding and Amrheins was very accommodating with answering questions through out the entire process - like when to and how to schedule fittings, etc. The folks at Amrheins made the whole dress process enjoyable.

Caterers

The folks at Blue Ridge were fantastic from the start! They go above and beyond just catering your event. They were very accommodating, easy to communicate with, and always on the top of their game. We didn't have to worry about anything on the day of the wedding because we knew Blue Ridge had it all under control. The food was a huge hit and was very tasty. You simply cannot go wrong with Blue Ridge!

Photographers

I am not a fan of posed photos and did not want a bunch of "traditional" shots on my wedding day. My search for a photo-journalistic style shooter led me to Brendan Bush. He did a great job of capturing a lot of candid moments through out the wedding and reception. He was also very easy to work with. I would definitely recommend him.

Cakes by Lisa

Cakes/Candies

I cannot recommend Lisa's cakes strongly enough. She gives you a free sample cake, which is a full small round. You can purchase extra sample cakes for the cost of ingredients. We ended up with a total of 4 sample cakes because we couldn't get enough! Lisa was very easy to work with and even went above and beyond by helping to keep the grooms cake a secret. The cakes turned out great on the day-of and were still so tasty, that even though we ordered way more cake than we needed we didn't end up with much left over! Her prices are reasonable and she was very accommodating. Any time we need a cake for an event in Roanoke, we'll be hitting up Lisa.

DJs

I've been to weddings where the DJs were just horrible. This was not the case with ours. Our DJ was pretty good. We did have some issues, though. It was difficult to hear what he was saying unless you were in the back of the space. He waited way too long to start with the toasts and dances so we all started dancing before hand. Our first dance ended up being "Party Rock Anthem" since we hadn't had our "official" first dance yet - this is very amusing to us. Other than our timeline getting pushed back (we had a late wedding so there was going to be only a few hours of dancing to being with), things went off without a hitch. The DJ's website was easy to work with and made it very easy to provide Do Not Play and Play lists. We ended up providing him with twice the amount of music he'd need for the night. Overall, though, the DJ was good. He was very accommodating if anyone came up to him with a recommendation.

Jewells Fine Jewelry

Jewelry/Accessories

We had a difficult time finding wedding rings that fit our style and that we liked. The bride doesn't like a lot of bling and the groom isn't much of a silver or gold guy. We went to Jewells on recommendation and it took us 10 minutes to find and purchase our rings! They had a sample of a Benchmark ring that the groom had his eye on but was never able to check out as no store ever had it. Similarly, they had a bunch of plain white gold bands for the bride to look at. The women who work here are incredibly sweet and helpful. They assisted with not only our purchase of the rings, but with registering them through Benchmark and with any other issues we had. They were, by far, one of the most laid-back and best jewelery stores we visited through our engagement and wedding ring searches. I highly recommend stopping in!

Hotels/Accommodations

We only had a few guests say at the Hotel Roanoke. The staff is always great and helped our guests work out a few small issues that arose from booking and cancellations. We even used the hotel as the last stop on our scavenger hunt during the rehearsal dinner. Plus, you can always get some of their awesome chocolate chip cookies!

This was a great choice of a hotel for our guests. People flying in didn't end up having to rent cars between the hotel shuttle to & from the airport and us providing shuttles to the events. The staff at this Courtyard were great. They helped us block rooms, made suggestions on which types/how many to plan for, did their best to put guests near each other, helped hand out gift bags, and facilitated any other request we or our guests had. The rooms were spacious and the beds were very comfortable. The big lobby downstairs made for a great area for guests to meet up or hang out if they didn't want to use the hospitality suite. Even though it's not downtown, I highly recommend using this hotel.

Ceremony Sites

The Market Building has been completely renovated and is a great place to hold events. Our rehearsal dinner was on the Mezzanine level of the Market while our ceremony & reception were on the top floor event space. We were the first wedding in the newly renovated space! The only big downside we noted was that there isn't a great staging room for the bride/bridal party. There is a green room, but it is behind the stage. If the bride wants to make an entrance from where the doors are, she doesn't have many options on where to hide. Otherwise, the main room has plenty of space to utilize and the bar/lobby area worked out really well.

Rehearsal Lunch/Dinner

The original plan was to use the vendors in the market to provide food for the rehearsal dinner. However, only 2-3 had actually moved into their spaces and opened by the time the event came around. The event was hosted on the Mezzanine level, which turned out to be surprisingly spacious.
