Like most people we set out thinking we'd have a small wedding then it grew legs! But we chose well with the location because York is so accessible and with a central venue it was easy for guests to find accommodation (but be careful in the racing season - hit a race day and you'll struggle for hotels). The museum as a venue was absolutely perfect for us because it kept everything under one roof. Wedding Mapper helped us keep track of guest lists, try seating plans and the wedding website saves on all the other info you might normally have to send in invites.
Easy and excellent value for money and they sent us extras which we weren't expecting. We uploaded our own rail ticket design to a fridge magnet format.
We first heard about Soul Patrol when a friend recommended them to us after they saw them as Casa bar in Beverley. We went along to see them and knew we had to have them! Our venue was a big space so we needed a big sound. They're very laid back, but they deliver.
This is a lovely resort, very self-contained with water sports and a tiki bar at poolside that serves food. They also do bike hire which is a good thing because the resort is a good 20-30 minute walk from the key attractions in Key West. This didn't really bother us because it was nice to pedal around, but if you're looking for a resort on the doorstep of the bars and restaurants this isn't it. However, there is ample parking which suited us having driven down from Miami (you won't get as good parking in the centre of Key West). The rooms and apartments are simply but colourfully decorated and our 2 person room had a decent sized fridge for snacks and booze (there is a Walgreens next door to stock up). They have 4 pools which have plenty of sunbeds and sunny spots for the sunbathers and shady spots too. Really friendly and helpful Reception staff who will give advice and make enquiries for you, and tons of money-off vouchers from the front desk.
This will seem odd because Philip Hartley is based in Dorset, but we met him at a wedding near Poole while he worked on a friend's photos and we were sufficiently impressed we wanted to get him up to York. Philip has a contemporary style and this fitted well with what we wanted. He spent all day working incredibly hard and he was dedicated to getting the right shots for us.
Incredibly helpful and professional, an award-winning conferencing venue. Heidi Valentine was our wedding coordinator and she did a great job with the team. Food was all locally sourced and down-to-earth quality. The venue is a very unique and special place. With it being a museum you can only marry at 4pm, and timings after that have to be carefully managed especially if you're thinking of lots of posed family pics between ceremony and food. However if you're like us and going for more conversational style, you'll manage just fine. After booking our day it transpired that a massive exhibition was scheduled to re-launch on the same day (the Class A4s – Mallard etc) which meant it was heaving on the day, but Heidi managed our expectations well and actually the alternative way we ended up having our drinks reception (in one of the glass conference rooms overlooking the Great Hall) was probably better than our original idea to do it on the museum floor.
This is where I stayed as the bride the night before the wedding day and I was treated like royalty. We then stayed there on the wedding night too. Its very much on the pricey side, so I'd say if you were only looking for a hotel for one night and you're not spending long there, it might be too much. Our photographer came and took some photos in the hotel on the beautiful sweeping staircase. Good food and really comfortable rooms with Molton Brown toiletries.
