During the American Civil War, Fort Fisherwas constructed near one of the two outlets to the Atlantic Ocean from the Cape Fear River. It was to become the largest and most important earthwork fort in the South and kept the port of Wilmington, North Carolina open to blockade runners supplying necessary goods to Confederate armies.

Two major battles were fought there, and many Union soldiers received the Congressional Medal of Honor for their gallant participation in that fighting. When FortFisher fell after a massive Federal amphibious assault on January 15, 1865, its defeat helped seal the fate of the Confederacy. This site has been declared national historic landmark. Along with a restored palisade fence, approximately ten percent of the fort still stands since much of it has been eroded by the ocean.

FortFisher State Historic Site is located in Kure Beach on what was then known as Federal Point and today as PleasureIsland.
