Our wedding reception at the National Arts Centre (NAC) was fabulous. We chose to get married in a church nearby, but you can have your ceremony there too. For being right downtown it is very reasonably priced. The room rental fee may seem steep at first, but it includes everything (linens, flatware, tealights) and there is no cake cutting fee! We wanted an all-day breakfast for dinner, and they accommodated our request happily, along with serving mimosas. The Fountain Room was a perfect size for our 100-person wedding, and having the terrace overlooking the canal on a warm summer night made the day even more perfect.
The other review mentions some negative things, but we weren't kicked out until 2, and alcohol was flowing until 1.
I can't give it 5 stars since the venue wasn't perfect. During the last speech we could hear the music from the room beside ours, which was a bit distracting. But once our music started (on the dancefloor at the other side of the room) we never heard it again. Communications via email were sometimes a bit unclear, but there is only one contact person, which is nice, and she is great. The evening of our wedding there was a festival at the park across the street so Elgin street was closed, which isn't the NAC's fault, but something to be aware of.
Overall, a great experience, and I would recommend the NAC to anyone.
The NAC is a great place to have a wedding, overall. The location in terms of proximity to downtown attractions is fantastic - many of our guests did a bit of Ottawa sightseeing before the reception started.
The NAC as a whole, however, is a challenge. I found dealing with their Banquet Coordinators extremely frustrating - and there were a lot of things that could not be accommodated. Many times I was told things down the line (for example, what the room rental rates were) that were conflicting with earlier emails and statements.
The food is pretty good, and our guests immensely enjoyed all that they ate.
One of the big challenges was we were supposed to have the reception room until 2:30 a.m. - but suddenly, I was told at 12:30, that the reception was ending at 1 a.m. FOR NO REASON.
As well, I had to give a DETAILED event plan to the NAC a month before the wedding - yet during the reception, their banquet coordinator kept asking me mundane questions like "When will speeches start?" - when he had the event plan!
Overall, I would be cautious in recommending this vendor. It's beautiful, relatively affordable (except they charge 30% in taxes!) but you will deal with some challenges.
