Iowa City City Park is nice, or there are lots of wineries in the area - especially in Amana. Palisades State park in Mount Vernon is also very nice.
We just got married at the Gazebo on the Green, just north of Iowa City. It's a beautiful spot, but the owner is a nightmare. She overcharges, claiming that she'll make things easy for you, and then charges you for every little thing, things which seem like they should have been included in what the contract outlines. She didn't even give us electricity or let people use the bathroom there without charging more. She hurried us out of there and then charged us extra for clean up. We had an amazing wedding, but it was despite her extreme difficulty...beware.
I would check out local parks, and also St. Bridget's Flower Farm sometimes hosts weddings. And Cathy DeValk, the owner, is the NICEST person ever! Definitely see if you can get flowers from her. They were so beautiful.
Hope that helps.
thanks for the info, celia1! we actually met with the owner of gazebo on the green, and got that sort of vibe. the place was gorgeous, but out of our price range, especially with needing to rent portable bathrooms and provide our own electricity. we're actually going with the secrest octagonal barn in downey. there are bathrooms, electricity and it is 1/3 the cost of the gazebo:) Oh, and we're also going with st. bridget's for our flowers!!
who did you use as a caterer? did you use aero rental?
We used AeroRental for our wedding... they were very nice, but somewhat difficult to work with because they are only open until 3 on Saturdays and closed on Sunday. We wanted to have them deliver our tables for us (extra cost, of course) but we couldn't get into our venue until 4, so there was no way they would deliver them for us. It wasn't their fault that our schedules didn't match, but it seems like a place that rents for big events might want to be open on the weekend! Just keep that in mind!
