Hi! We are having our reception at Ocean Key Resort. We picked this location because we fell in love with the Sunset Pier. Having your reception on a pier on the gulf of mexico staring at the sunset just won us over. We also liked the menu and the different types of dinner we could choose...anything from plated, buffet, to stations dinner with personal chefs. Stephanie Happ is an EXCEPTIONAL coordinator and is well known throughout Key West. After speaking with many other reception location coordinators, I liked Stephanie due to her professionalism. She will get back to you immediately and is a wealth of knowledge. Her co-worker, Katherine Dolan is a pleasure to work with and has been so helpful in answering all of my questions and concerns. My fiance and I are confident that our reception will go through smoothly and better than we expected. Good luck with your wedding planning! If you want to email me: [email protected]
I would definitely recommend the Ocean Key House over the Pier House. The Sunset Pier is AWESOME!!!
I am the Events Director at Hemingway's, born in Key West, a Conch and still live in the house my grandfather built in 1935 next door to Hemingway's. Pier House was the only hotel I would stay at when I moved away from Key West to do the corporate global thing and would come back for visits. I returned 10 years ago for good. Pier House has been at their location since I left Key West in the 70's, being a bit of a historian I liked them for that, BUT, when they took their 2nd story bar and sunset deck out to put in more rentable rooms with water views they lost my vote of confidence in allowing the general public, their hotel guests and wedding parties like you to have the ability to rent that spectaclar area. Go to Ocean Key. I hope it all goes well for you, Dave Gonzales
I would recommend Ocean Key over Pier House as well. My fiance and I were just out there in July and looked at both of those places. Ultimately we went with the Westin, but Ocean Key was our second choice. I'm not sure if you've visited but when we were able to get a feel for the space at Pier House it was easier for us to make a decision (though Erin the coordinator seemed great!). The two outdoor spaces had a covered portion as well and the ceilings were low and almost felt garage like. I've been told it's a result of the changes that Dave mentioned above. I haven't downloaded my pictures from our trip yet, but if it would be helpful for you to see I can try and do that this week.
I totally disagree with the above posters. We had our wedding June 26, 2010 at the Pier House and it was amazing.
We went to Key West in Nov 2009 to look at Pier House, Ocean Key, Hyatt & Westin. We chose the Pier House because we could get married on the beach (as opposed to a pier), the coordinator is fantastic, offered multiple options and quickly replied to all emails, the rooms are lovely, the food is outstanding, the atmosphere suited us perfectly and all of the staff are friendly and helpful.
If you haven't already, I would strongly recommend a scouting trip so that you can get a feel for both of the resorts.
BTW, we rented the suites that had been the 2nd story bar that Dave mentioned above and it was unbelievable! We had our own private sunset every night if we wanted ;)
I can email you pictures if you like.
