I know you are looking for opinions from other brides, and I'm sure some will chime in. But as a vendor who has done over 100 beach weddings in the past year, I highly recommend a professional sound system.
Though it doesn't seem like it when you are there, there is actually a lot of white noise on the beach with the wind and waves, and you cannot hear a typical ipod speaker system or an acoustic guitar from more than a few feet away.
We just did a blog post about this very topic that you might find helpful with choosing your music: http://www.simpleweddingsblog.com/2010/03/wedding-planning-tip-songs-for-wedding.html
Good luck with your wedding plans!
We had a big boombox for the wedding. You couldn't hear it at all. You don't really think of the beach being loud until you're trying to hear something else. It was a bummer because I had music that my late father was singing that was supposed to be playing as I walked down the aisle. Everyone was asking me later if there was supposed to be music, since they heard nothing. I don't think you'd need it for the actual officiant and ceremony, but if you want to hear your music, definitely go for something more than a boombox! :)
Not a boombox. I think they need a serious sound system, which a lot of companies seem to offer. I wish my wedding planning company had told me about this problem. I was planning my whole destination wedding in 6 months so I didn't have enough time to research everything in detail. The wedding companies really arent blowing smoke up your you know what when they say you need a sounds system.
Ahem...I'm a "good vendor" and I've been a part of this thread!

And of course, good luck with your wedding plans!
Yeah, you really need to do your research with wedding companies. If you're not feeling 100% with a company, drop them and find someone who knows what they're doing and how to make you feel comfortable. I was concerned about my company but had so little time to change them. I think the reason I'm on this website so much answering questions is because I don't want people that have more time to plan to make mistakes just because they haven't been through it and don't really know what to expect. My wedding planner didn't show up to the rehearsal dinner!! And when I called her a million times that night and the following morning she told me that she "wasn't scheduled" to be there. We'd been talking everyday for the past 6 months via email and she wasnt scheduled to be at the REHEARSAL DINNER??? It still drives me nuts when I think about it. So yeah, just be completely comfortable with who you're paying to give you the best day of your life :)
Platinum Florida Wedding Company. I hate to badmouth, since my wedding did turn out really beautiful. But saying you weren't SCHEDULED to be at my wedding rehearsal in a little too much for me. I was on the verge of tears at my rehearsal dinner. Other than nobody having any idea what they were supposed to do since we weren't able to rehearse, it was also really embarrassing! I worked my butt off planning this wedding and it made me look like an idiot. Just saying :)
Thanks for all the great info! I will definitely ask for a sounds system for our ceremony!
