Chairs?

Hi all! From what we hear, beach weddings are fairly short. We are planning to have around 60 guests (so far) at our wedding. Chairs from our wedding company (Seashell Weddings)are an a la carte item, which have a set up fee of $100 + another $100 for ea set of 10 chairs! That would be $700 right there! I'd rather put that $ toward a modest splurge on food/drinks! Do you think your wedding was short enough for your guests to just stand? (FYI, Our guests ages range from 2yrs to 60yrs so none are extremely old or physically challenged).

We got 20 chairs (mostly for older people) and the rest of the people were standing. Ours weren't THAT expensive though, so I'd say they can all stand as long as noone has health problems and will need to sit! We had a couple people that needed chairs, but other than that everyone was standing most of the time anyway. Our wedding was short and sweet so it was no problem.

Hello...i personal have not had my wedding yet..but one thing i noticed from visiting Florida and see weddings on the beach is that a lot of people end up standing anyways because they can't see infront of the person sitting infront of them. Unlike a church where you might have staged seatting ...the beach is level so it is harder for guests to see...Also try renting from a rental company. US Tent Rental in Sarasota is charging us ...$2.75 per chair and it also includes set up so for about 62 people that is only $170.50..don't know how they are charging you $700...that is extreamely over priced!

First of all, that price is not unreasonable for the chairs. Most people don't realize that a vendor has to have someone there to deliver and setup the chairs, and then stay with them on the beach, at least a couple of hours in advance. If you rent from a rental company, you, or one of your guests will need to be sitting on the beach to accept delivery of the chairs about two hours before your wedding, remain with the chairs until the wedding starts, and then stay with the chairs for an hour or two after the wedding until they are picked up. And this price presumably also includes about $1 million in liability insurance, which you will not have if you rent from a rental company.

As far as whether you should have chairs in the first place, this is a personal choice. It certainly looks neater and makes it look more like a wedding, with an aisle to walk down. But having guests stand and just kind of "huddle up" around the ceremony can be great too, if that's what you are looking for. It's certainly much more casual.

One other thing to note, you might also want to consider a sound system so your guests can hear the ceremony over the wind and waves. Good luck!

Good point on getting a sound system. Our wedding package was supposed to include music, so the wedding planner brought a little boombox. I'm not kidding. I had a cd of my dad (who passed away a few years ago) singing that I wanted played during the wedding, but you couldn't even hear it at all. Everyone was asking if there was supposed to be music since they couldn't hear anything.

You're right, and I've seen that happen several times - people think they will save money by bringing a boom box, CD player, or iPod to the beach, and no-one can hear the ceremony or the music thay spent so much time planning and preparing.

Same goes for acoustic guitar - you just can't hear it.

When you're standing there, the beach doesn't seem "noisy", but there is actaully a lot of white noise with the waves and wind, and it can be very difficult to hear without the right equipment.

I tell our clients that it's a shame for their guests to travel hundreds of miles for their wedding, then not be able to hear a thing during the wedding! So the sound system is worth every penny.

It's not that we're trying to pressure them into ordering more stuff (which is what they sometimes tend to assume)- it's simply because we want their wedding to be as perfect as possible, and we do this all the time, so we know what works and what doesn't.

i looked on your wedding website and you have an option for a day of wedding coordinator, which will coordinate vendors. Wouldn't they coordinate the chairs as well,,,set up...getting to the venue early..staying after etc. I have a day of Wedding coordinator and they are handeling all of this. Basically your cost of chairs is the same cost i paid for my chairs and my day of wedding coordinator ...who will handle all of the days events from the wedding to the reception & your saying that isn't over priced? I am not a vendor...this is a comment from someone who is planning a wedding ...not someone who is trying to get business from others.

Thank you for taking the time to look at our website.

First of all, let me point out that this forum is open to vendors just as it is to brides and grooms, and I have just as much right to post information in here as you do. Vendors have a lot of valuable information that can help you plan your wedding if you're willing to listen, and my advice is no less valuable than yours.

Secondly, I'd like to point out that the person who started this thread has already booked their wedding with another vendor. I am not trying to steal anyone's business, I was simply trying to be helpful and answer the question that was originally posted, based on my experience with Florida beach weddings.

That being said, you actually have a good question. In the case of chairs, our policy is if we don't provide them, then our employees don't touch them. You can imagine the liability associated with setting up folding chairs on the beach, and we pay a lot of money every year for liability insurance. However, we obviously cannot be responsible or liable for chairs that are being delivered and set up by someone else. This is outlined in the FAQs on our website.

Are you assuming the risk yourself, or is your wedding coordinator providing liability insurance? Most cities actually require you to have liability insurance in order to get an approved permit.

Our $99 wedding coordination fee is for the ceremony only. It includes coordination of the ceremony and bridal party, officiant, photographer, musicians and/or music.

I never said your information was not valuable. If it were not for websites like this with vendors as well as brides and grooms posting their own opinions and ideas...planning a wedding would have been very difficult.

However, my personal opinion was that [email protected]'s comment about her price on chairs was a lot when compared to the amount i am spending. Now i agree everyone elses situtation is different, but you had said that the $700 was not an unreasonable price, which is your opinion and you are completely entitled to that as well. When i stated that i am a planning a wedding and i am not the vendor...i am reflecting my own intentions. I understand what it is like to plan a wedding and get 5 vendors all with different pricing for Chairs. You don't know if the most expensive guy you go with is good ...or if they are ripping you off. I am just offering my PERSONAL experience to help others.

My Rental company provides insurance on all items rented with them...in case there is an issue with liability. I actually really like your website and i am interested in some of your items to rent on the beach. What is great about this website is the people reading it get to see both sides of the fence, so they can decide for themselves what is best for their wedding.

Very true. Sorry if I took your comments the wrong way. Sometimes it can be frustrating when you are honestly just trying to help and it seems like people are questioning your intent. I see now that was not what you meant, and I apologize for being defensive.

And I see you have been corresponding with my wife about your photography needs. I hope we didn't start off on the wrong foot in this discussion thread!

Yes i am looking at your wedding bamboo items as well as a photographer...i feel like i have searched everywhere for photographers & no luck so far...but i did like the shots from the photographer on your website. Waiting to hear from them!

I had a beach wedding in Siesta Key and picked a location on the beach that was close to the water and surrounded by rocks so I had to get chairs in order for people to feel comfortable during the ceremony. The space I used was not large beach space but smaller and more intimate. Folks walk out to this space to watch the sunset. I agree that overall its seeing your guests seated is beautiful (esp. in the photos) and important for all of your guest to be comfortable and not distracted during your ceremony. If it's hot (which is will be in Oct.), your guests can relax in their chair with a cold bottle of water. I coordianted everything myself in a short period of time (5 months) and worked with all the vendors directly over the phone and one meeting in person. I used Rental Depot and they offered 2 different kinds of chairs with one being more expensive. We opted for the cheaper version for $1.30 each white chair and used them at the outdoor pool reception as well. Luckily, my family members and caterer (had a mini van) volunteered to set up the chairs, tear them down and set them back up again at the reception site. Let me tell you that was no easy task! I felt bad asking my family and friends (specifically asked people I knew who could complete the task to my expectations) but they appreciated being involved and helping. I knew this would be a struggle but it worked out in the end. Email me directly if you want more tips, details, or recommendations on planning your wedding.

Chairs were included with my wedding package from my coordinator. The ceremony was short so if people are able, standing shouldn't be a problem. My coordinator had a nice litle sound system with a boom box that was great. Congrats and have a great wedding!!
