Civil Marriage in Cartagena?

Posted in Cartagena, Bolivar, Colombia

Anyone know what documents are required for a civil marriage in Cartagena, and can anyone recommend a notario? I am a US Citizen and my fiancee is Colombian. We are planning a very small wedding (10-20 people) and do not want a church wedding, just a civil ceremony (and an awesome party)!

Thank you so much for any helpful information you can provide.

All you need are your birth certificates for "marriage purposes" and should not be issued 30 days later. Nonetheless you can get more accurate information from any Colombian consulate near you. I found a good site here:

I just got married in Cartagena and I had a civil ceremony at Casa Pombo. My notary was AMAZING!!!! Her name is Julieta and she gave us a really nice speech, just like she knew us! I will send you her contact information sometime tonight. She is THE BEST!!! My wedding planner was right (Caribe Cordial); she gave a romantic and magical touch to my ceremony!! I highly recommend her and my wedding planner, of course.

I would like to know the requirements you had to give to get married in Cartagena. I will be getting married in April or May. How long does it take or many days is it to wait to get married. What are all the documents needed to get married in Colombia. I just want to make sure I have everything so there will be no problem when I get there next year. Please let me know, and thank you. Take care and God bless. Sincerely, Daniel

Let me know where to go to the Notary, because it sounds like it well there. Thanks

Hi
I highly recommend you hire someone in Cartagena to help you with this process, it's alot of paperwork! And, different notarios may request slighly different documents. I worked with Daniela Lopera of Caribe Cordial and I highly recommend her. They will co-ordinate all the requirements with the notary and make sure you have a smooth wedding. It would be difficult to impossible to do without the help of someone like Caribe Cordial!
In my case, my husband was living in Colombia and I was living the States, so my documents had to be all certified originals WITH the apostille seal (a special seal you have to get in order for Colombia to recognize your documents) AND they have to be translated into Spanish first by an official translator. One mis-step and your marriage will not be valid! In addition to co-ordinating all the documents Caribe Cordial can plan the wedding and they are excellent at it!
Good luck - Cartagena is a magical place and it's certainly worth going through all the document ordeal to get married there. By the way the Notaria was Julieta (recommended by another poster) and she is fabulous!
Good LUck!

P.S. Of all the inquiries I sent out, only Caribe Cordial responded quickly and was the most helpful. Some of the others expressed interest but never followed through, etc. I was extremely please with all aspects of Caribe Cordial - they are professional, knowledgable and really nice people! I would never have been able to have the beautiful wedding I did if it werent for them.......

There is a lot of great information being shared here, I'm extra happy I found this place. It does seem rather complicated to even get started. My Bride and I are planning on having a civil marriage in February this year, just a simple marriage without guests because we need to apply for a spousals visa a year in advance so that we can have that for another wedding planned in Hawaii.

I see a lot of good remarks about the notaria - Julieta, does someone have her contact information available? If so please send that to me at [email protected]

Do you think it is possible to have a civil marriage with only a notary? Is it possible to acquire all of the necessary documents, have them translated and certified by working with a notary alone? I understand the benefits and advantages from using a wedding/ planning service company but cost is an issue for us. My bride to be is still in medical school. Thank you for any help you can provide and especially if you think there is something I am missing. I am from the USA and she is Colombian, can we simply see a civil judge with the papers and the help of a notary and make this happen?

Mahalo nui loa again for any help you can provide to us.
