We decided that if our friends and family were coming from various corners of the globe that we would give them a wedding to remember. And that we did.
Getting married in tuscany was a fantastic decision. There was sunshine for the Brits, greenery and water for the desert dwellers (we and many of our friends live in Dubai), lots of 'old stuff' for the Aussies and food everyone. We sent out 'Save the date' a year in advance and everyone made a holiday of it, creating a really relaxed and happy event.
I can not say more praise for the caterers. They were fantastic. The food was incredible, the service delightfully efficient yet un-obtrusive and the food was amazing(did I already mention that?). We opted to inclde the traditional italian wedding cake, a crostata di frutta. This was a light and novel (for non italians) to end the meal with it being assembled infront of the guests. I had reports that it was the best wedding cake people had eaten and some even went for seconds after six courses!
The location was spectacular. If in doubt, go all out. It even has lovely inside space if everything goes pearshaped and it rains.
We had foodie guests from all over the world (Australia, UK, UAE) and none of them left dissapointed (or empty!). The food was beautifully presented and tasted even better. The service was top quality and un-intrusive.
Our relationship with the planners started out well but by the time we arrived in Florence, we were fed up and throughouly disalousioned with their service. However, in swooped the angel of all wedding coordinators (Simone) and it was a flawless service on the day. Apart from the hicup we had a couple of weeks before the wedding, this service was very good. Planning from abroad is always difficult but with Weddings in Italy it was reasonably easy. The advice that we were given regarding vendours (flowers, hair, celebrant, food, photographers) were all top quality and spot on.
A fairytail wedding venue. Spectacular views and plenty of great places for wedding photography (inside and out).
Best to organise transport for the guests (especially if they dont speak Italian) prior to the event as we were told that there is a) no public transport up there at night and b) it is difficult to order a taxi there with no or limited Italian.
We booked most of the Relais out for the bridal party. The staff there were exceptionally helpful. The rooms were simple and clean - who needs more than a comfy bed and a warm shower in florence?! We had the Attica (top room), which had a small sitting room attached and fabulous views of the Piazza. The Relais is in a perfect location for meeting people as all tourist maps (and lots of signs) point towards the Piazza.
Finding the place was a tad tricky in the car as they had recently changed many of the street directions!
Parking service is available on request - they will pick up the car from the Piazza and deliver when required again. Expensive but the best option in the middle of Florence.
