Our experience was wonderful. We live in the Chicago area but I grew up in des moines so that was where we chose to have the wedding. I was able to find great vendors, all of whom were above and beyond in their talent and their personalities were great. The ceremony and reception were at gorgeous places, and the cherry on top of it all was the perfect weather we had for the entire weekend.
I grew up here. I was baptised here, had my first communion here, and confirmed here. My sister was married there, my godson was baptised there, so, naturally it was a given for where I would get married. You have to be a member though, so, really this is probably not a helpful review of you are looking for locations to get married.
The event planning staff is wonderful. Miki put up with all my millions of questions throughout the whole year of planning. They were also willing to work with me, there were things I wanted that weren't on the menu and they made it happen, etc. The grand ballroom is stunningly beautiful, the elegance of the old beats the blahness of a new hotels ballroom anyday. Hardwood floors, dripping chandaliers, and creamy drapes over giant windows. You can't beat it!
The Savery is another beautiful hotel in downtown Des Moines. I did book some rooms here, and while we had a few guests stay there and enjoy their stay, I would not reccomend them from the planning aspect. They were difficult to get ahold of, i left lots of voicemails and emails and would only sometimes get called back. When I called to check on booking status, I was shuffled around from person to person nobody really wanted to help me. If you can get through all that though, it really is a lovely hotel.
We booked a few rooms at this hotel outside of downtown and close to shopping just in case any of our guests wanted a different option. Nobody actually stayed here though. The staff was friendly however and prompt in getting the contract for the blocked rooms sent to me.
