Shaded by gnarled live oaks, scenic views of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean, and two waterfront gazebos, Fort Fisher State Historic Site can make you wedding teh place to start your family history.
During the American Civil War, Fort Fisherwas constructed near one of the two outlets to the Atlantic Ocean from the Cape Fear River. It was to become the largest and most important earthwork fort in the South and kept the port of Wilmington, North Carolina open to blockade runners supplying necessary goods to Confederate armies.
Two major battles were fought there, and many Union soldiers received the Congressional Medal of Honor for their gallant participation in that fighting. When FortFisher fell after a massive Federal amphibious assault on January 15, 1865, its defeat helped seal the fate of the Confederacy. This site has been declared national historic landmark. Along with a restored palisade fence, approximately ten percent of the fort still stands since much of it has been eroded by the ocean.
FortFisher State Historic Site is located in Kure Beach on what was then known as Federal Point and today as PleasureIsland. We have multiple locations for a wedding that you can choose from such as ocean front gazebos, beach areas, or maritme forest groves. Tours of the wedding locations are offered to assist you in choosing the right place for your special moment.
We didn’t realize we hadn’t applied for our permit for the ceremony until about 2 months before the wedding; it was something that slipped thru the cracks. Because they only allow one ceremony at a time on the beach, and there was a wedding scheduled the hour before our wedding, there was a strong possibility we would be denied our permit. I called them and explained the situation to them, and they were able to work something out so we could have the ceremony there. I was so thankful. One thing I liked most about having our ceremony at this location, we were allowed to have chairs, décor, anything we wanted. Most beaches in the area don’t allow any of that, as it can interfere with emergency vehicles going down the beach. So I liked that we could have these items at this location.
This was an easy and oh so beautiful place to have our ceremony. The north gazebo feels more private than some of the other areas, it makes for a really lovely wedding site, at either the north gazebo or the little beach area right beside it. The staff is helpful & friendly. There was only one small problem, where we had paid twice, but they readily fixed that. Would definitely recommend this place to all!
