< back to topic list >Formal attire vs Guayaberas!!!!!
Hi everyone, I have a dilemma, I always dreamed with a formal wedding with my guests and bridal party wearing long dresses and suits, but since I mentioned it to my friends and family that the wedding will be in Cartagena, they have suggested that I should suggest "guayaberas" for men including the groomsmen. I personally don't like it, but I would love to hear your suggestions. I am getting married in December and my reception will be held in the Heredia teather.

I got married in cartagena last September and it was really hot! I had the guests wear guayaberas and the girls short dresses. For the ceremony my bridesmaids wore long dresses and the the groomsmen wore suits, but they all changed into more comfortable/cooler clothes during the reception. from experience, it gets really hot there, even in December so if you're open to it I would stick to guayaberas. My wedding was outside, but since you're inside the Heredia Theater with A/C then you might be ok doing suits/long dresses

Definitely guayabera and an all-white look for men. Believe me with almost 40 degrees until 4 pm and around 30 in the evening, you would need a whole army of air conditioners to keep ppl cool. Long cocktail dresses should not be a prob for women. I personally recommend chiffon over satin
Hi,
I also had the men wear guayaberas with khaki pants, while the groomsmen wore all white. The bridesmaids wore long dresses. It's a perfect look for a Caribbean wedding. My husband didn't want to wear a guayabera and instead wore a formal white suit and he was very hot by the end of the night.
However, it's YOUR wedding and you should stick to what makes you happy. It helps that your reception site is indoors so suits/long dresses shouldn't be too hot. Hope this helps!
TEAM-BRIDE
Your Wedding Is in Teatro de Heredia which is a venue that provides air conditioned. If on the other hand, your venue did not provide air condition I would advise "guayabera " 100%. Yes Cartagena is hot and humid, but you have a venue which allows you to be more flexible with the attire. Where will your ceremony venue be?
As a wedding planner the most important thing for me is to make sure that any decision my brides make will make them completely happy.
After al you are already spending a good chunk of money and EVERYTHING should make you happy. The last thing you want is to have that feeling of "Yes everything was beautiful, but I would have liked...."
Good Luck!

Andrea the guayabera is widely used in cartagena for weddings, but the dress code is defined by the couple.
Weddings in outdoor venues used guayabera but as your wedding will be at the Teatro Heredia and air conditioning in this place is very good and permmite ask guests to wear jacket and tie, without fear of being heat this outfit.

U dont wanna force male guests to wear suits. At me wedding only the best man and myself were wearing suits for the ceremony and we changed after about 1.5 hours into Guayaberas. Way too hot and humid for suits all night long.

Hi,
I would suggest Guayabera. I'm getting married in September and I ask my guest to wear Guayaberas but find them in the USA is very difficult. I live in DC and I haven't been lucky. Internet seems to be the only option. Any advice? Thanks.
Pretty easy - buy them in Cartagena - either in the old town or in that big mall close to Manga. Most of our guests bought their Guayaberas there 24 hours before the wedding.

Mery, Miami is not an options since we live in Washington DC but thank anyways.
