How do I address the outer envelope when I'm not using an inner envelope??

I am not going to use inner envelopes, as I think it is unnecessary, and a waste of paper. So how do I address the outer envelope if I want the person to know he/she can bring a date? What about families? It seems awkward to address an invitation to "Ms. Jane Doe and Guest," but I don't know how else I would let Jane know that she can bring a date.
