My home church is in Summerville, SC and they will marry me but I haven't been there in 6 years since I am a student and have moved away. The problem is I can't find an afforable venue for the reception in Summerville.

We will me living in Mt Pleasant after we are married so I would love to join a local church and get married but the priests are making it difficult. What do I do?..

I'm getting married in Summerville later this year. We're getting married and having our reception at Summer House... its not cheap, but much much more affordable than anything we saw in Charleston. Alternatively how about hiring out a restaurant? Sweetwater is doing our catering. Firewater Grille is a nice restaurant, and may let you book out a room/the entire place?
Depends what you wanted from your reception. We're not having dancing so didn't need space for that.
Appart from Summer House and the restaurants, I don't think there's much else around that's affordable and right for a wedding?

Hope this helps!

Thanks! I looked there but we are having a little less than 200 and we want it to be a FUN event with lots of dancing and an open bar. We looked at Wescott but you could not bring in your own catering services (my fiance's my family does catering). I wish we had a hall or a common site people have receptions at..

I got married in Summerville in April 2009 at Colonial Dorchester State Park, which is land that my family settled in the 1600's. Experienced some of the same challenges in terms of finding afforable reception sites for approx 150 guests. Colonial Dorchester is a beautiful park, and you can rent it for weddings - the cost is only the $2 admission fee per guest. If you are doing something in the daytime, it is a beautiful location right on the ashley river. There are bathrooms but no shelter. We were lucky it didn't rain. There is a wonderful restaurant, Elaine's, right by the park - at the intersection of Dorchester Rd and 61? Old Trolley? (I can't remember, I always get confused up in Summerville!) and I believe they would be a wonderful reception site/caterer, but I think they are too small for that many guests plus dancing. You might call and see if they can cater and/or have a recommendation for an offsite location that will meet your needs. I had my reception at the South Carolina Society Hall downtown. Fee was approx $2000, but they have chairs and tables, and it is convenient for all your drunk friends to walk back to their hotel rooms. I used The Caterer to cater there, although you can select anyone you like, including your family/friends if you have someone willing to gift you that service. The Caterer did an amazing job, and very affordable. Best wishes!
