Marriage License Requirements

I was informed that the requirements to obtain a marriage license in Puerto Rico have changed where you no longer need to get the blood work done - unless it is required in your home state.

I tried to Google it and the only thing that I could find was that the new legislation was signed in August, but I don't know if that means it was also effective in August.

When is the change effective? We are at the point where we either need to get the blood work done or follow the new requirements and I want to make sure we do the correct thing.

Please help.

Thanks!

It is Law num. 127 del 11 de agosto de 2010.

As lon as you are not a Puerto Rico resident you now only need:

1. A medical certificate that meets all the requirements of your state. It cannot be older than 10 days from the moment it was made.

2. A legal id from issued by your state.

3. Passport, and

4. A sworn statement that states that you are nor Puerto Rico resident and you are at Puerto Rico just to get married.

You can read the newspaper article here: http://www.elnuevodia.com/masfacilcasarseenpuertorico-778720.html (sorry, is in spanish).

It is in effect already.

Ok so i have called my contact in PR who works for the medical center and she says they have been talking about it but, they have not been told that anything has changed yet. We are doing this on our own someone from our hotel told us what to do and how to do it so wish me luck. They want to charge like $300 to help you and I think that is a big rip off and scam. I guess they think we are all rich. Goodluck I hope this helps.

Hi. I have tried contacting the Hall of Records in PR just now but its closed right now. I found a number to call (787) 767-9120 exts. 2101, 2109, 2110, 2111. You can try to contact them to find out exactly, all of their government pages are in Spanish so I don't know how well or if you speak Spanish. I will try again tomorrow to see if I can get through. Hope this helps a little.

This is what you need:
*Blood tests (within 10 days of getting the license)
*ID (driver license or passports)
*Birth certificates
Whatever you do- BRING YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE. Nowhere does it say you need it, but I got married this past May, and they almost didn't issue our license because we didn't have them. Our wedding planner (the AWESOME Paola from El Convento) had to sweet talk the woman behind the counter, and she finally gave it to us.

Ok, I'm getting mixed information on obtaining a marriage license. Some say we have to be present when we apply and it could take up to 2 months. Other say apply by mail and the present your documents when you get there. So what is the scoop?

No blood test required for licensing. Go to the Registar of Demagrphics office. And yes you need to go in person. You can try by mail but let me give you and example. I sent them a letter after I was married. I sent the letter in Dec 2010 explaining that they made a minor mistake on my license and they just sent me a response by mail Nov. 2011 now you try the mail if you like. Hope this helps. Goodluck!
