I would recommend the Whitney in downtown Detroit. Since they are a fine dining establishment, you can also have the reception there as well. They only charged $600 to have the wedding there on a Saturday at 11am. We had the place until 4pm. The service we got was great and we would definitely recommend it. Call them and ask for Nicole. If you want to see pics of our wedding at that location, go to http://www.jamesstephanieslife.shutterfly.com Congrats!!
The Scarab Club located at Farnsworth and John R is another charming place to host a wedding (you can do it in their outdoor garden), and then host a reception inside. I've been to a few weddings there -- all lovely. They are also far cheaper than the Whitney. Or the Inn on Ferry Street is another great place to host a wedding and reception.
I am a wedding and event planner, and I do understand about the Catholic Church. One of you must be Catholic, and you must be a member of the Catholic Church. I planned a wedding last summer, and we found a Catholic Church that would marry them, but they needed to become members at least six months before. If you would like to contact me, I have hundreds of venues in my database and can help you find the ceremony and reception location that matches your personality and style.
