I have never seen the hotel, but have heard mixed reviews...mostly negative. Generally, it was like a frat house with stained carpets, smelly, etc. I would visit it before I commit to anything. I've had drinks at the restaurant, but no food, so I guess I can't help there.
Congratulations on your engagement! The problem with Narragansett is the lack of good hotels. The Village Inn is probably the best you're going to get, but my feeling is that it's way overpriced--my husband and I stayed there on our wedding night 2 years ago, and the carpeting is stained, it smells damp, and is overall dated. We also lost one of our key cards, and were charged $5 upon checkout--I know rules are rules, but really, we were getting married and you're going to worry about your 5 buck key card charge?
If it's possible, I recommend staying at one of the local B and B's. There are several in the area and people seem very happy with them.
As far as Amalfi's food goes, I've only eaten there once, and the food was only OK, but I do know other people like it. The view is very nice and the dining room very large and suitable for a wedding.
I would suggest the Holiday Inn or Hampton. Hampton was new in March 2008.
Thanks for all the prompt responses! If the hotel isn't great that's fine, I'm sure I can find others and just bus people to and from the reception. Have you heard good things about the caterer - Amalfi? They seem to have an association with most of the well known venues in the area.
I have not heard anything about them. We had our wedding August 2008 and we used West Bay Gourmet. KC was great and the food was amazing. All of our guests loved the appetizers we had and the main courses. KC made it easy for us and she is very tuned in to everything and seemingly everyone in the area.
My friend just came up for a visit and stayed at the Hampton Inn and said it was fantastic.

We are going with Amalfi as our caterer. Alyson is wonderful. Now, I don't know how the food is going to turn out yet, but she has totally inspired confidence and been willing to work with me on our budget. I've read good reviews on theknot.com and I have a friend who worked for a wedding planner and said that amalfi had a pretty good reputation.
We also blocked rooms for our out of town guests at the village inn. I don't know if it was the best choice, but we decided that location was the most important thing, and our guests can walk to the reception site (the north beach clubhouse) if they want to. The receptionist took me on a tour of the rooms and although they weren't amazing, they were clean and good enough. She has also promised me that they're in the middle of redecorating and the rooms will look better by my wedding in august. She showed us one of the redecorated rooms and it was a big improvement. So, we'll see what happens, but overall the location was our deciding factor.
