September, 2010 in Charleston

"Our wedding was perfect! Our parents thought we were nuts for selecting a destination wedding in Charleston (they live in Minnesota and Michigan and we live in Chicago)...too hot/humid, too expensive for guests to travel..too hard to coordinate. They ended up eating their words and loving everything about the wedding and the city. Our vendors were all top-notch; no kidding...we had NO problems. The weather was warm, but we warned guests to dress for it and guys simply took off their jackets after the ceremony. With the exception of a handful of people all our guests made the decision to travel and had so much fun doing all the different things Charleston had to offer. Our families rented beach houses and stayed a week. Now our family is saying that they can't wait to come back to Charleston and see more of South Carolina."

Ceremony: Ceremony and Reception

Travis Allison Band

PO Box 242
Isle Of Palms, SC 29451, US

"This band was awesome; our guests loved their sound and their extensive playlist. We are still getting comments about how they made the evening. And they were on time, set up and ready to go and played their hearts out all night long. Young and old loved this band! Even our 76 year old grandpa was out there dancing."

Cakes/Candies Vendor:

Jim Smeal Wedding Cakes

657 N Sterling Dr
Charleston, SC, United States

"What a talented cake decorator! We weren't into that paste stuff and Jim created a buttercream cake that was so finely decorated we couldn't believe how lovely it looked. It held up up during the heat and didn't droop a bit. We chose 3 different cakes/fillings and our guests loved all of them. In fact, the leftover cake was so good that the family dove into it late that night after the wedding. This cake was worth every penny."

Elisabeth Toms Weddings & Events, LLC - Coordinator - USA

Elisabeth Toms

"She may be just starting her business, but this wedding planner did a fabulous job at a very reasonable price. Her attention to detail was incredible and she worked well with all the vendors, bride and mother-of-the bride to coordinate a difficult destination wedding with many facets. Very professional...you won't regret working with her."

OOH (Out of Hand) Events

"Great choice of antique/vintage items to create a very special, unique theme for your wedding. Our favorite was the antique china which me mixed/matched to make very individual place settings. We also used an antique bar and rented tables chandeliers, lanterns, birdcages, antique mirrors, mercury glass, old shutters and an outdoor wicker setting arrangement."

Favors Vendor:

Baked Charleston LLC

Suite 103-104, 160 East Bay Street
Charleston, SC, United States

"We ordered two kinds of biscotti for our guests to take home and eat in the AM with coffee as they dashed off to the airport or hung out in Charleston. This biscotti was excellent...huge pieces and we probably could have ordered just one per guest as they turned out to be quite heavy. It was loaded with chocolate, nuts, extra and made fresh just a day before the ceremony. We picked it up and stuffed it into cellophane bags and tied it with a bit of rafia. Really nice!"

Tiger Lily Florist

131 Spring St # A
Charleston, SC, United States

"There's a reason this florist has been voted the best wedding florist in Charleston. We asked for a wedding with a vintage feel...very organic with lots of natural arrangements, mercury glass, antique vases. Everything was perfect and just what the bride envisioned. Who would have thought that decorative cabbages and ivy could look so awesome in a bridal bouquet? We asked for something that wasn't the standard roses and whatever look and that's exactly what we got...so creative and so beautiful!!!"

"This officiant has also written a book on the best vendors and suggestions for coordinating your wedding in Charleston (see website link). She did an excellent job in assisting us with writing our ceremony and making it very personal and non-denominational as we requested."

"Fantastic photographer!! This woman works her tail off for you. She and her assistant were active all night long and the result was hundreds of excellent photos that captured all the details. And she produced 3 slide shows of the event that were to die for (ckeck out her blog). We also had her do our engagement photos and it was a wonderful experience."

BBJ Linen - Rentals Vendor - 7855 Gross Point Road, Skokie, IL, 60077, United States

BBJ Linens

7855 Gross Point Road
Skokie, IL 60077, United States

"What an outstanding collection of linens!! The hard part was making up our mind about what to use. We opted for moss green bengaline and moss damask with ivory sheer leaf toppers. It was so easy and they were so over-the-top helpful. They even set up a sample table and sent a photo as I was unable to get to their showroom. And they sent extra samples to our wedding planner so that she could match the linens with OOH Events china and Tiger Lily Florist arrangements. It was easy to order on-line and the linens arrived right on time and our planner simply bagged them up after the event and had them picked up for shipment back. VERY high quality linens in excellent condition all around."

Ceremony and Reception - Ceremony - Magnolia Plantation Rd, Charleston, SC, 29414

Ceremony and Reception

Magnolia Plantation Rd
Charleston, SC 29414

"Ours was a destination wedding and so it was a little difficult to find exactly the right place. We are so glad we selected the Magnolia Plantation Carriage House. The venue along the river under the oak tree draped in moss was lovely. We set up the patio for drinks, which got people who wanted to chat away from the band but still able to hear the music. We got just the "old South" feel we were looking for and our guests from the North loved the venue as it was so different from most weddings they attend. We opted to use Carolina Catering as they are the preferred vendor. Their food was better than most weddings, but not top-of-the line. We opted to ship in our own wine for the meal, but used their preminum bar for the reception and party following dinner. There were some challenges that we faced...table arrangements for the 80 guests and our 5 piece band were tricky as the annex has a very low ceiling and some of our guests were 7 feet tall...and the inside of the Carriage House is dark paneling with dark carpet, so it took a bit of decorating to give it a brighter, more formal feeling we were going for (we opted for a vintage look with natural, organic florals)...we did get some boaters with engine noise going through during the ceremony, but then it was Labor Day weekend on the river and people tried to pull over or shut down their motors when they saw the wedding in progress. It wasn't that bad, but if that bugs you, then be aware...and finally, we did opt to have extra bug spraying the day before the wedding in order to keep down the mosquitos that are pretty heavy by the river and in the bamboo border that sits along the Carriage House. Our only recommendation is that the facility could be buffed up a little in terms of the grounds maintenance around the site and the bathrooms...but they are working on it and really, our guests thought the site was just wonderful! All in all, for their low price we were very impressed with all we received and recommend it to couples who want that outdoor wedding with a casual, but still somewhat elegant touch of the South."

"Great hotel with that Southern charm. The rooms reflect the age of the building (small baths) but are well-decorated with lovely comfortable beds. The service is outstanding and the food at the little restaurant was quite good."

"We had about 40 people and while it was pricey, we wanted something intimate with excellent food/wine and something memorable for our family. We got just that. Service was excellent and the food was outstanding...really outstanding. We ate in a private room and were able to set up a slide projector with photos of our family, friends and us through the years."
