"I did not want a precise and formal cake design for a Maine wedding (I was going for modern, preppy and outdoorsy to fit the New England island setting). I asked Jessica to make cupcakes similar to Magnolia Cupcakes of NYC (her standard recipe is slightly different). She delivered--people went crazy for them (my dad still talks about them). At my request, she brought a large white tier over to the island that was decorated to match our setting. While I do not believe she is a professionally trained cake designer, she did everything we asked and made everything so delicious. She would be 5 stars---there was just a little lag time in email responses at times, but she did respond and deliver."

"Often named to the top restaurant lists in New England. Frommer's Review Fore Street has emerged to take its place as one of New England's most celebrated restaurants -- chef Sam Hayward has been profiled in Saveur and House Beautiful, and the restaurant has been listed in Gourmet's 100 best list. Its secret is simplicity: Local ingredients are used when possible (note the rustic vegetable cooler overflowing with what's fresh), and the kitchen shuns fussy presentations. The room is equally honest: Light floods in through huge windows in the loftlike space, and a sprawling open kitchen is in the middle of it all, a team of chefs stoking the wood-fired brick oven and grilling fish and meats. The menu changes nightly; some of the most memorable meals are prepared over an apple-wood grill, such as Maine pheasant, or two-texture duckling with grilled pears. Lobster and rabbit courses never fail to disappoint. Though it can be mighty hard to snag a reservation here, particularly on a summer weekend, Fore Street sets aside a few tables each night for walk-ins. Smart move. Now, you make one: Get there."

"Check out the locals and have some REAL fish chowder. Frommer's Review A glowing write-up from Jane and Michael Stern in Gourmet magazine in 1999 obviously hasn't gone to the proprietor's head. This local institution in a squat concrete building on the non-quaint end of the waterfront has drop ceilings, fluorescent lights, and scruffy booths and tables. It's populated very early by local fishermen grabbing a plate o' eggs before setting out; later in the day, it attracts students and businessmen. The menu offers about what you'd expect, such as inexpensive sandwiches (fried haddock and cheese, corn dogs, tuna melt). It's most noted for breakfast, which includes 13 different omelets. Where else can you find five different types of home fries? Dinners include favorites such as lobster rolls and fried clams."

"Frommer's Review This upscale, hippie-chic pizzeria -- an offshoot of the original Flatbread Company in Waitsfield, Vermont -- may have the best waterfront location in town. It sits on a slip overlooking the Casco Bay Lines terminal, so you can watch fishermen at work while you eat. (Picnic tables are on the deck in fair weather.) The inside brings to mind a Phish concert, with Tibetan prayer flags and longhaired staffers stoking wood-fired ovens and slicing nitrate-free pepperoni and organic vegetables. The laid-back atmosphere makes the place; the pizza is quite good, though toppings tend to be skimpy."

"Frommer's Review Dana Street's intimate, brick-walled bistro on cobblestone Wharf Street (in the Old Port) specializes in seafood that's fresh as can be (the docks are close by) and cooked just right. Diners sit at copper-topped tables, designed so that the waiters can deliver steaming skillets directly from the stove. Looking for lobster? Try it grilled and served over linguini in a butter-garlic sauce. If you're partial to calamari, they know how to cook it here so that it's perfectly tender, a knack that's been lost elsewhere. Otherwise, go for seared tuna, fresh mussels, or a grilled piece of whatever's come in (swordfish, perhaps). This place often fills up early, so reservations are strongly recommended. But, like Fore Street, one-third of the tables are reserved for walk-ins; it can't hurt to check if you're in the neighborhood. In summer, outdoor seating is available at a few tables on the alley."

"A walk here is the best way to start. The promenade was laid out in 1836, during the height of Portland's life as a thriving seaport. Today, the city of about 64,000 residents (230,000 in the metro area) maintains the large park with a 1.5-mile paved walkway overlooking the blue expanse of the bay. Peaks, Big Diamond, and Long islands, just three of the 300-plus in the bay, stretch out across the horizon. At the base of the park is the East End Beach, a municipal boat launch ramp, public restrooms, and a charming narrow gauge railway. The railway, which operated in the 1880s, has been reconstructed by Portland businessman Phineas Sprague Jr., and runs short trips to the park and back throughout summer and fall (weekends Oct. 22-Nov. 20) from Portland Yacht Services on Commercial Street."

"Crescent Beach--Cape Elizabeth, Maine Located eight miles south of Portland on Route 77, mile-long Crescent Beach (part of the State Park) is popular with families due to its gentle surf. The beach is rocky towards the water but sandy at the top. The park has a snack bar, picnic tables, bike racks, restrooms, cold water showers, lifeguards, and plenty of parking. 207-799-5871"

"Frommer's Review Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Portland is this 1794 lighthouse, easily one of the most picturesque in the nation. The light marks the entrance to Portland Harbor, and was occupied continuously from its construction until 1989, when it was automated and the graceful keeper's house (1891) converted to a small museum. Still active, the lighthouse is closed to the public, but visitors can stop by the museum, wander the grounds, and watch sailboats and cargo ships come and go. The park has a pebble beach, grassy lawns, and picnic areas well suited for informal barbecues."
