An old cafe dating to the days when Puccini was still composing, but, although portraits of opera singers line the walls, the place doesn't draw an opera crowd. Instead, it's young professionals and hipsters that you'll find, sitting at the stylish bar, sipping cappuccinos, or relaxing in the back room filled with plush seats.

Vesuvio Cafe

Above the colorful stained-glass windows of this 1950s beatnik haunt reads the mantra: "We are itching to get away from Portland, Oregon" and the names of the North Beach underground, the 'mad ones' are drawn in cement near the cafe's front door. Such echoes of SF's literary history, along with an unbeatable second-story view of the colorful crux of Broadway and Columbus, bring a mixed bag of writers, artists and tourists to drink where Kerouac & Co., the aforementioned 'mad ones' once did.

California Academy of Sciences

The Academy's Golden Gate Park location is closed for renovation until 2008. It is temporarily located at 875 Howard Street. This is a great place for an inquiring mind. The wonders of the natural world are on display in the Steinhart Aquarium, complete with a penguin colony; the Morrison Planetarium, offers a sky show; and a natural history museum with a hunk of jade the size of a steamer trunk. There is also a collection of artifacts from the local native populations of the Bay Area and Oceania, and a whimsical courtyard display of animal statues by renowned sculptor Buffano. Admission prices vary according to age. Admission is free for children aged 3 and under, and for all guests on the first Wednesday of each month.
