October, 2012 in Sutherlin, Virginia

"The whole vision of the bride was to get married in a barn near her hometown...which we really didn't think was going to happen until we discovered they were renovating Cloverdale Quarters into an event venue. The only problem with the venue was sweating the weather...if it had rained, our plan to use an outside site for the venue would have been out and caused a lot of coordination problems. We did rent a tent for cocktail hour in case of rain, but decided to chance it for the ceremony. We could have had the ceremony inside and then change it over for the supper, during the cocktail time when guests were in the tent, but it would have been a lot of work. Instead, we ended up with a gorgeous October day and all worked out as it should.

The wedding went smoothly with lots of help from not only the venue owners, but from wonderful assistance from all the vendors. We thought outside the box for the food and got a nearby Ruritan club known for their barbeque to do the meal. Our bartender and some servers for the inside tables kept the beverages and table service flowing smoothly. We had people from 10 states and one foreign country attending, so due to that and the service of alcohol, we provided a complimentary shuttle from and to the motel. All of our guests were very complimentary of the venue and the event was not only a good wedding but a rocking party!"

Cakes/Candies Vendor:

Carter's Cake Creations

Sutherlin, Virginia, United States

"Carter's Cake Creations is Harriet Carter, based out of Durham, NC. She is a personal friend that does beautiful and tasty wedding cakes. We wanted a cake that looked like birch bark with fall leaves and a topper of two polar bears...she figured out how to do it and made it look spectacular. She specializes in buttercream icing, so the cake beautiful, but it tastes excellent as well! We had a lot of compliments on both the look and taste of the cake."

"Homestead Florist is located on HWY 501 in Roxboro, NC. We contacted them due to recommendations given to us by numerous people. They were extremely easy to work with and carried out our ideas to perfection for a reasonable sum of money. Everything from the bouquets, to the table centerpieces, to the bridal arch was done with taste and the rustic touch we were looking for. They were very cooperative for a couple last minute adjustments to the decorations. Highly recommend using them for an event."

Cloverdale Quarters - Ceremony - VA

The Barn Cloverdale Quarters Sutherlin, Virginia

"The venue is an outstanding renovated quarter horse breeding barn, full of charm. It features marble floors, two big fireplaces, a full featured kitchen, a room suitable for the bridal party to change in, a huge porch, and lots of outside room. The venue can be rented for the entire weekend making it possible to do the rehearsal supper as well as the wedding there or just giving more time to set up and tear down the decorations. It is owned by Larry and Laurie Miller, who were very helpful with all the planning and coordination of the event. There are several outside sites to choose from if you wish to have the ceremony outside. We set up outside the barn doors and it was a beautiful background for the ceremony. We rented a tent in case of rain for cocktail hour (which it turned out to be a gorgeous day) and actually had the bar on the porch. You have to get event insurance if you serve alcohol. The barbeque dinner and dancing was held inside. We left a small space for the first dance and was able to accomodate 120 people sitting...I think the venue says it can seat 150, but it would be tight. We moved a few tables after the first dance to accomodate further dancing. We utilized a buffet line for food, but did serve beverages and cake at the tables due to the amount of people. We were very pleased with the venue and would recommend it highly for a small-medium wedding, especially if weather permits the use of the outside spaces. The music has to end at 10:00 pm...but that left plenty of time for a sparkler farewell and to allow people to load the shuttle for the out of town people we provided."

"The facility and rooms are clean and there is a fairly good breakfast available. The staff seemed responsive to needs. A block of room was reserved at a reduced rate. There was a small snafu over the prepayment of a couple of rooms...if you use them and prepay, please check with them a couple of days before the event."
