KATE AND RUSS'S WEDDING

September, 2008 in Portsmouth

"Our wedding was great! Even though it rained all weekend, we chose Portsmouth because it has a vibrant downtown with plenty of shopping, restaurants and bars, and it gave our out-of-town guests something to do. We would definitely recommend getting married there, and we're looking forward to going back for our first anniversary."

Cakes/Candies Vendor:

Jacques Pastries

128 Main Street
Suncook, NH, United States

"Jacques has a reputation for being the best, and they did not disappoint. Not only was the cake delicious, the staff was extremely accommodating and had a number of flavor and size options to meet our budget. We got to taste everything, and boy were there options -- everything from espresso cake to Bailey's buttercream frosting. We had a four-tier cake with different flavors for each layer. Two layers were traditional chocolate and white cake, each with raspberry preserves. But our favorite, which we used for one of the layers and the top layer (the one we took home -- Jacques includes it in the overall price) was a spice cake with apple preserves, with cinnamon and caramel buttercream. It was perfect for our fall wedding and absolutely delicious. FYI: Jacques isn't on the Seacoast, but they deliver all over northern New England. I think our delivery charge was about $100, but they may differ depending on distance, day of the week or season."

Florist:

PJ's Flowers & Gifts

Portsmouth, NH, USA

"PJ's is amazing. They're based in Bedford, NH, about an hour from the Seacoast, but they do deliver to the Sheraton. We lived in Manchester at the time, and PJ is a family friend who has done other weddings that we've been to. He totally put us at ease and understood our "vision" completely. When we weren't sure what we wanted, he talked us through it and showed us different options. He also gave us helpful tips for saving money, like buying our own vases from (we got them at Grenon Trading Co. on Route 101 -- a huge craft supply store). We waited until they were on sale and got them for about $45! The flowers were definitely one of our favorite parts of the wedding -- absolutely beautiful."

"I never really understood what limo companies meant when they said things like "superior service" or "special attention to detail" on your wedding day. Don't they just have to show up and get you there on time? I totally got it on our wedding day. Richard, our driver from Grace, blew me away. It was raining out, and he patiently escorted each of my six bridesmaids to the limousine under umbrellas before coming back for me. Once we were alone, he took out some tissues and tucked them discreetly in between the flowers in my bouquet, in case I needed them during the ceremony. He made sure my engagement ring was switched to my right hand (so my wedding band would slide right on). He escorted us into the church, and put gloves on before spreading out my dress behind me as I made my way down the aisle with my dad. Now that is serious top notch service. He was so sweet."

Ceremony:

South Church

292 State St
Portsmouth, NH 03801, US

"We chose this church for several reasons. While many others in the area require you to be a parishioner for months before even asking to book a wedding, South Church -- a Unitarian church -- welcomed us with open arms. They also let us use our own pastor, who performed a non-denominational service. The outside can look a little stark and imposing in the wintertime, but in the summer and fall, a beautiful fenced-in garden surrounds the front. Inside, massive windows on either side let in tons of light. The acoustics were great, and a gigantic organ at the front of the church sounded amazing. The carpets definitely need to be replaced -- some ripped spots are duct-taped -- and the benches are a bit worn, but we loved the old New England look of this place. The people who worked there were very welcoming and laid-back."

Reception:

Sheraton Harborside Hotel

250 Market St
Portsmouth, NH 03801, US

"We loved Kara Townley and the rest of the staff at the Sheraton. Anything we needed, Kara always found a way to make it happen. They invited us months before our wedding to taste the menu with other engaged couples, and quickly responded to any inquiries we had along the way. They helped us create a function that fit in our budget, while still making sure the whole event was elegant and classy as we imagined. On the day of, there was not a single issue that we had to address, everything was perfect. And at the end of the night, we were accompanied to our honeymoon suite with our cake, strawberries, cookies and champagne waiting. Our guests loved their accommodations."
