CHANTELE AND STEPHEN'S WEDDING

February, 2010 in Cape Town

"We had a great wedding, a truly wonderful day. We got a bit stung by or wedding planner who we thought did not look after our own interests and was incapable of forseeing future problems. Organising the beach ceremony was also very taxing. One thing I would say is that.. do your homework, their are many things you can do yourself and don't accept poor service from anyone. It may just be another wedding to them but to you it will rank up their as one of the most important days of your life."

Ceremony: Clifton 4th Beach
Reception: The Bay Hotel

Band:

Die Jakkie Louw Band

Cape Town,, South Africa

"They were probably the best aspect of our wedding reception. As a mixed Afrikaans/English couple we wanted both elements to feature at our wedding. We had about 40 guests from abroad (all English speaking) and yet they were the people who liked the band the most. They were very professional, were happy to perform in both English & Afrikaans and most importantly, rocked the house down. There are very few decent bands around, we know, we searched for ages and whilst Jakkie Louw is an established Afrikaans band in their own right they were more than reasonable, financially and we would certainly recommend them to any couple who are looking for similar entertainment."

Coordinator:

Absolute Wedding & Event Coordination

Cape Town,, South Africa

"Whilst AW's had some decent contacts and ideas, their effectiveness in wedding coordination was very poor. They often did not think of the most basic things couples would need on the day, were not thorough in making sure all that was promised was delivered and made important decisions without consulting my wife and I much to our dismay. Also and most significant was their attitude to us as a client. At no time did we feel that we were their no.1 priorty, rather it was their own commission which they continually looked to increase. After 4 months of asking we received our budget, 1 month before our wedding.... it was 4 times the figure we agreed and given so late we had no choice but to try and work with it. If you have a unlimited budget, they may be for you although don't expect 5* treatment. If you have a budget and want to keep to it you're probably better off going somewhere else."

DJ:

Trilogy Music

Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

"Our DJ from Trilogy Music was very professional and provided a fantastic service. They are more than just a DJ who turns up on the day. We met with them prior to our wedding to discuss all aspects of our wedding, the music we liked/wanted for the wedding etc. They provided a whole portfolio of different types of lighting, music tastes, sound opportunities to suit our venue and needs. However, what was most satisfying was the reaction we got from our guests. They were more than happy to cater for our needs as a mixed Afrikaans/English couple music wise and the energy on the floor was very good at all times. We would certainly recommend Trilogy Music, they provide a first rate service."

Invitations Vendor:

Blueprint Design Studio

Cape Town,, South Africa

"We were absolutely delighted with the service & end product we got from BluePrint Design Studio. We had our save-the-date cards, invitations and wedding stationary all done their and our expectations were exceeded each time. Not only were they financially very reasonably, Sanet, the designer and owner of the company would never accept second best. Until she and we were happy she would not stop working for us. They always worked to our schedule, met impossible demands set by us and produced first rate products. From what I gather most of her business comes from referrals, clients returning as she does stationary for other events too and we would join them in recommending her also."

"We did have an unforgettable ceremony on Clifton 2nd Beach... however if you are thinking of having a wedding on a beach please note; it is not easy nor cheap. Firstly cost, it will probably cost the same as your reception. Everything from chairs, the marquee tent, food, drink, sound equipment and 100s of others needs to be brought especially in. Also, the city council wants a separate licence for all of those things. Its not difficult to get a licence.. however be advised you can only get married on non blue flag beaches in Cape Town. This is a recent development where we were stung. We had originally booked 4th beach in clifton but the bye-laws changed and we had to settle with 2nd. This is not a problem as 2nd beach is probably nicer and less crowded albeit more difficult to get to. Get your licence application in first off. Its not expensive but can take a couple of months to get back to you... and you don't want to book your tent etc without having the beach licence itself. Don't think you can do it on the cheap either. Your ceremony will last the best part of an hour and if you have drinks afterwards your guests will be there for 2-3 hours. With 20-30C temps and the sun blazing down on them... you will need seating, shade, refreshments and activities such as music to keep them all satisfied for that length of time. Is it worth it? If you can handle the stress and organsation nightmare then perhaps and as long as you have significant resources to fund it will be unforgettable."

Reception:

The Bay Hotel

69 Victoria Road
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

"Our reception was decent. The have a large room to cater for large weddings. The food is first rate and reasonably priced. There are few problems they have however. Firstly, parking.... they have none. They can guarantee you 10 spaces.... not great if you're expecting 150+ guests. They can offer the sports field next door as long as its not being used but during the summer wedding months on a saturday its always being used... we had to arrange our own parking and don't underestimate how important it is... ever been to Camps Bay on a Saturday at 5pm.... gridlock. Drinks.... they are very expensive here. The cheapest bottle of sparkling wine is R140 ex. corkage... and is not a great brand. Good tip, bring your own wine. There is no additional charge and you can get the very best SA wine for more than half the price. We brought in Graham Beck Brut NV for R70 per bottle and delivery was free. Admin wise, they are not great... they have a high turnover of staff and as you often have to book 1 year in advance it means who you first meet will not be the person who ends up running your wedding and complications from handover do arise. We also got the feeling that they didn't really care much for us. Whenever we had a request it was either vetoed by them straight away or it took a lot of persausion for them to agree... not what you would expect from a 5* hotel in Camps Bay. Their furniture, chairs, glasses etc are also not of great quality. Thy looked like 200 times used business function glasses, functional, not wedding worthy. We had to bring in our own glasses also. Lighting is also an issue here. Their reception does not have great lighting. You must hire the swag they offer else your venue would be very dark. Your party can go on till 1am, this was enough for us but even if you ask for an extension it will probably be refused due to their other guests."
