"Our wedding was amazing! We got married on Folly Beach and had the reception at Bowen's Island - next to the restaurant, near the water. Somehow, the rain held off and we had an awesome sunset to cap off the amazing day. Our band was fabulous, and had everyone dancing! We hired a caricature artist and all of our guests seemed to love it! We truly had the wedding of our dreams."

Hi Lynn and Joel,

Congrats! My fiance and I are recently engaged and are planning a wedding in Charleston for 2011. (we are in Australia now so trying to gather as much info as possible!) I used to attend CofC and remember the fun oyster roasts and parties thrown at Bowens Island. I saw that you had your reception there - was this before or after the fire? You said it was 'next to' the restaurant. Did you hire a tent and caterers?

We have been scouring the sites and picturesque Charleston (the battery and all the plantation homes) are far out of our reach for a reception. So we are looking into something a bit more lowkey and our style - not cheap but just not to break the bank! If we can dress up Bowens island and get a band down there - that would be perfect!

If you have any thoughts on this or could perhaps share your story and maybe photos that would be a great help! We may have to scrap Charleston altogether. I think the people who can drop 6 figures for a wedding really ruin it for the rest of us in getting quotes real people can afford!

Congratulations Sarah! I would love to give you some info and pics to help you out. Bowen's Island would be perfect for you! Our reception was after the fire, and there was quite a bit of rubbage around - but that didn't seem to hinder the beauty or the essence we were trying to capture at all. We did hire a band and I definitely recommend checking them out thru the vendor we listed - Other Brother. They were amazing. However, we did not rent a large tent. After much debate, we decided that the $1500 or so would be better of spent somewhere else. Robert - ah, I'm blanking on his last name at the moment - the owner of Bowen's, has a "tarp" that they provided in the rental agreement. I know the sound of "tarp" probably isn't what you quite thinking of for your wedding reception - but I'll post a pic and you can see for your self what it looked like. We were happy with this because, it really seemed to capture the island feel, and didn't look like I first thought it would. I'll post some pictures, and if you have any more questions, feel free to let me know!

Thanks so much - that is so helpful! My mom is going down to talk to Robert this week so all fingers crossed we can plan a special day just like yours. I also LOVE Cru Cafe - can only imagine their catering would be divine. Would it be possible to share the password on your photo link (says this wedding website requires a password?) if you prefer to keep private you could send it to my email address [email hidden (log in to view)]).

I think it will make sense when I see the photos but just wondering if there was a reason you did not use the restaurant / pier or dock for the reception? I just remember from big parties there that there is a long (old rickety but certainly adds to the charm) dock that leads to a covered space (where the restaurant is I think! but it's been years...) The covered space was where the bands always were.. maybe it changed after the fire. no idea.

That's weird, I'm not sure why it is requiring a password. it is lh4823 - I've just posted pictures on the site, so no personal info is listed. We used the dock for pictures, and guests were free to walk around and enjoy. We could have used the covered area where the restaraunt is, but since we decided to use Cru Catering instead of Bowen's food (fried, canned beer, etc. just wasn't the style we were wanting at the reception). I think it will depend on what you guys like! Robert Barber - that is his name...a gem to work with! I am planning a small beach wedding @ The Palmetto House in October, how did you like the house? What is the max amount of people you think could sleep there? i know the website says 22 but you never know :) Also, love the bike idea!! did you rent them?

Lynn-

I am having my wedding at palmetto house as well, next fall. I was wondering if you could tell me anything about the house and having the wedding there. I haven't seen it in person yet and am trying to get some idea of what I have to work with! Did you have someone doing music at the wedding and if so, did you hire them? Was the beach large enough so that you did not have to plan the wedding around the tide schedule? Thanks so much for your help!

Your wedding photos are gorgeous, thank you for sharing! I'm getting married at a different house on Folly in just a few months. I was wondering about your ceremony--the music, the decor. Did you have musicians or some sort of recorded music playing? Also, what sort of decor did you use for the outdoor ceremony? Did you do any sort of unity candle/sand ceremony? Thanks!

Congratulations on your recent wedding. I am considering Bowen's for a reception this fall.
A few questions: How many tables/chairs did you order and did you consider using any of their chairs?
Also, did Cru Cafe bring in food for the reception and you not use Bowen's?

"Working with this vendor was impossible. They were so busy that it took forever for phone calls to be returned, and emails often went ignored. Stage presence provided our chair and table rentals, as well as lighting and staging for our band. While everything looked great, it was not set up how we discussed last, and the day of the ceremony when we were worried about rain - I did not even get a return phone call. Like I said, everything turned out ok - just the wrong table and chair set up for the reception."
