RACHAEL AND KEV'S WEDDING

October, 2010 in Salem

"Fall in Massachusetts is beautiful and we couldn't have wished for a more beautiful day. Wedding mapper was so much better than trying to program the whole map ourselves but most of our guests were from around town so I don't think they used it very much."

Ceremony: St Nicholas Church
Reception: Corinthian Yacht Club

Band:

Horizon

Beverly, MA 01915, USA
978-927-5165

"Horizon kept our dance floor hopping all night long! They also plaid at a friend's wedding and the music between the two events was very different. The band reads the crowd and make great decisions about whether to whip out the limbo bar, wacky props, on nothing at all. It is "wedding music" but it's done very well."

Florist:

Konstantina's Floral

Salem, MA, USA

"This was by far the best vendor that I worked with. Tina worked with my budget, listened to my vision, and provided beautiful results. She was a great communicator and got back to me immediately when I had questions. There is nothing that she could have done better, everything exceeded my expectations."

Ceremony:

St Nicholas Church

64 Forrester St
Salem, MA 01970

"This is the church I grew up in and I knew how much it would mean to come here for my mom. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of getting married in the church but the priests did a great job of making the ceremony accessible for those who aren't familiar with the orthodox church."

Reception:

Corinthian Yacht Club

1 Nahant St
Marblehead, MA 01945

"This venue is beautiful and a great space but we had problems with the bar and once the season started we had trouble getting in touch with the staff when we had questions. The food was fabulous and the space was perfect so we would still come here if we were to do it all over again. Parking is on the street but this was not a problem for our 150 guest wedding."

Restaurant:

Bangkok Paradise Thai Restaurant & Sushi Bar

90 Washington Street
Salem, MA, United States

"Do not be fooled by their incredibly tacky website, Bangkok Paradise is actually good. Great lunch and dinner menus, with sushi options. Rachael generally goes for the curry while Kev eats spicy something with chicken in it. “It’s good, it’s delicious.”"

Restaurant:

Jaho

197 Derby St
Salem, MA 01970

"Coffee lovers can’t leave the Northshore without stopping here to experience the only siphoned coffee on the east coast! The two locations (197 Derby St and 60 Wharf St, Salem) are around the corner from each other but siphoned coffee is only available at the 60 Wharf Street location. The 60 Wharf street location is especially cool because the building used to be owned by St Nicholas Church (where the ceremony is) and Rachael’s brother Matthew cleaned up the building for his Eagle Scout Project and used to host metal shows here."

Restaurant:

Old Spot

121 Essex Street
Salem, MA, United States

"Formerly called McSwiggins, The Old Spot is where Kev and Rachael first met in August 2004. A mutual friend (Santo) called Rachael to ask her to find a friend and come hang out with him and his friend from out of town (Kev). Rachael rounded up her friend Christina and the rest is history. If you head over on a Monday night you may be able to catch Headshaft, the house band that was playing when Kev and Rachael met."

Restaurant:

Red's Sandwich Shop

15 Central St
Salem, Massachusetts, United States

"Red's is raved about by the tourists and the locals. There are lots of options and quick service. The only problem is that the weekend lines can be really long and there isn't a lot of space so you may need to wait in the cold. Fun Fact: This is where Rachael asked her cousins Katrina, Hannah, and Leah to be her bridsmaids."

Restaurant:

Salem Beer Works

278 Derby Street
Salem, MA, United States

"Part of the Boston Beerworks clan, Salem Beerworks has a great menu of pub-food with lots of options (mmm, turkey tips!) and Beerworks’ own microbrews on tap. Blueberry ale actually has blueberries in it!"

Restaurant:

Salem Brothers Deli

283 Derby Street
Salem, MA, United States

"Pretty much anyone you ask for a diner recommendation in Salem will send you to Reds, and Reds is good, but their lines can be crazy and they only take cash. Brothers is really good but a little less crazy."

Restaurant:

Sammy's Roast Beef & Seafood

17 Canal Street
Salem, MA, United States

"If you aren’t vegetarian and you haven’t had a roast beef sandwich on the Northshore please eat one before you leave! Kev recommends Sammy’s in Salem but, being from Beverly, Rachael prefers Nicks Famous Roast Beef (139 Dodge St, Beverly). Roast Beef is best enjoyed slightly tipsy at 2am but can be enjoyed any time day or night."

Entertainment:

Dodge Street Bar & Grill

7 Dodge Street
Salem, MA, United States

"Not quite a dive bar but not quite not a dive bar, Dodge street is an unpretentious place to grab a beer and listen to music. Weeknights are more low key but on the weekend the back room opens up and there is a $5 cover."

Castle Rock

Castle Rock, Marblehead, MA 01945
Marblehead, Massachusetts, US

"Park on the street and walk down the path for a great view of the ocean."

Attraction:

Derby Wharf

Derby Wharf, MA

"If it is a clear day, it's worth stopping after you drive over the Ocean Ave Bridge to check out the view of the Boston Skyline."

Attraction:

Marblehead Lighthouse/Chandler Hovey Park

Chandler Hovey Park, Marblehead, Massachusetts 01945
, United States

"The Marblehead Lighthouse is where Kev and Rachael were that fateful New Years Eve 2004/5 when they decided that even though Kev lived in Cape Coral Florida and Rachael lived in Beverly Massachusetts, they had something worth pursuing. And then, five years later on New Years Eve 2009/10, Kev got down on one knee in the snow under the glow of the lighthouse."

Attraction:

Peabody Essex Museum (PEM)

161 Essex Street
Salem, MA, United States

"If museums are your thing, the PEM is worth a look. There's even a Chinese house that was broken down and shipped over from China. ($15 adults, $13 seniors, $11 students, under 16 free)"

Attraction:

Salem Visitor Center

2 New Liberty Street
Salem, MA, United States

"The Salem Visitors Center is a great place to start a day of exploration. It’s right by the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall and from there you can wander down to Pickering Wharf http://www.pickeringwharf.com/ (and get some coffee at Jaho) or mosey over Chestnut Street (known as the widest, and one of the most beautiful, streets in America)."

Attraction:

Salem Willows Amusement Park

167 Fort Avenue
Salem, MA, United States

"While most of the attractions will be closed by October, chances are that Hobbs will still be open and serving ice cream and popcorn. Even if they aren't open, this is nice space to check out and take in the ocean air. For an extra tasty treat, order a vanilla ice cream and a small popcorn. Stick the popped kernels to the ice cream and eat them off. (Tip via Rachael's late maternal grandmother)"

Attraction:

Salem Witch Museum

19 North Washington Square
Salem, MA, United States

"How could we forget? Salem is the pop-culture home of the Witch Trials (even though they really took place in Danvers) and the wedding is in mid-October. The Haunted Happenings Website http://www.hauntedhappenings.org/ and Pickering Wharf promise to offer plenty of haunted houses and people in strange costumes."

Attraction:

Topsfield Fairgrounds

207 Boston Street
Topsfield, MA, United States

"The Topsfield Fair is a true New England experience that runs October 1-11. Horse pulls, pig races, largest pumpkin competition, they have it all."

Attraction:

Winter Island

Winter Island, Salem, MA 01970
Salem, Massachusetts, US

"Winter island is an old fort. Plenty of space to wander around and picnic, and also where Rachael's aunt Becky married her husband Larry in July 2009."
