"The single best thing about Roanoke, in my opinion. The Parkway runs roughly along the Appalachain Trail, so there are tons of trails if you feel like a little hike. A particularly good drive is from here up to the Peaks of Otter in Bedford, 43 miles away. It's absolutely gorgeous."

"This is the Mill Mountain Star (Roanoke is known as the Star City of the South). It's really worth visiting as it affords a great view of the city and a peek of the Blue Ridge Parkway."

"A good turnaround point for driving the parkway, and a great and somewhat challenging one-mile hike with a really rewarding view. They also have a hotel and a restaurant with a kitschy gift shop, but I would not recommend the restaurant."

"Unfortunately, Tan Yer Hide tanning salon went out of business (also Vinton), because they would have been here as well. Other hilarious business names we've run across include Dis N Dat (a consignment shop in Williamsburg) and What the Pho (a Vietnamese restaurant in Seattle)."
