Canter's - Restaurant - 419 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA, United States

Canter's Fairfax Restaurant

419 N Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA, United States

"One of the most famous restaurants in Los Angeles. Ben Canter started out in the restaurant business in New Jersey in 1924. The Canters moved their restaurant to East Los Angeles (Boyle Heights) in 1931 when that was still a predominantly Jewish neighborhood (the grave yards of East Los Angeles are full of Jewish names, reflecting those times). They moved to this location in 1948. Well preserved interior (it was once a movie theater). Outstanding deli food (stick with the specials for breakfast if you're on a budget), and validated parking. Pantry Cafe the Original

877 S Figueroa St
Los Angeles, CA, United States

"In my opinion, the Original Pantry Cafe is one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles. An incredible value and open 24 hours. They claim they have not closed since 1924 (during a move in location in the 1950s when one meal was served in the old locale and the next in the new). With humble origins, this joint began life with 15 counter stools. However, Silverlake Bodhisattva informs me that there was a two day period when they did have to shut down (for reasons I won't disclose). It is rumored that they do not have the keys to the front door in any event. The ambiance is absolute time machine (at least at the counter), including the waiters. This place can be packed at 3:00AM. Wonderful and extremely filling breakfast (make sure to order their Sourdough bread - the buckwheat pancakes are also to die for). I believe the place is owned by former Mayor Richard Riordan. Former owners were Paul Leuenberger and founder Dewey Logan . Please"

Pinks Hot Dogs

709 N La Brea Ave
Los Angeles, CA, United States

"Pink's isn't your usual guidebook recommendation, but then again, this crusty corner stand isn't your typical hot dog shack. Name another hot dog stand that has its own valet who deftly parks the stream of Rolls-Royces and Mercedes that pull up regularly. This L.A. icon grew around the late Paul and Betty Pink, who opened for business in 1939 selling 10"

Restaurant:

Roscoe's House of Chicken & Waffles - Restaurant - 730 East Broadway, Long Beach, CA, United States

Roscoe's House of Chicken & Waffles

730 E Broadway
Long Beach, CA, United States

"As unusual as it might seem, the marriage of chicken and waffles actually has deep roots. Thomas Jefferson brought a waffle iron back from France in the 1790s and the combination began appearing in cookbooks shortly thereafter. The pairing was enthusiastically embraced by African Americans in the South. For a people whose cuisine was based almost entirely on the scraps left behind by landowners and plantation families, poultry was a rare delicacy; in a flapjack culture, waffles were similarly exotic. As a result, chicken and waffles for decades has been a special-occasion meal in African American families, often supplying a hearty Sunday morning meal before a long day in church"

Restaurant:

Yard House Long Beach - Restaurant - 401 Shoreline Village Dr, Long Beach, CA, 90802, US

Yard House Long Beach

401 Shoreline Village Dr
Long Beach, CA, United States

"The Yard House opened its doors in 1996 in Long Beach, California and continues to grow thanks to the continued loyalty of its valued guests and tremendous team of employees. The Yard House found its roots in an earlier rendition named the Boiler Room in Denver, Colorado. After nearly 15 years in operation founder Steele Platt sold the Boiler Room and headed out west. In a collaborative effort with partners Harald Herrmann and Carlito Jocson the first Yard House expanded upon the Boiler Room concept by offering a wide selection of draft beer and showcasing a diverse menu of American fare. Yard House derives its name from a 3-foot tall glass originally designed in England to hand to stagecoach drivers back in the day when travel by horse drawn carriage was common."

Angeles Walk: Bunker Hill/Historic Core

100 S Hill St
Los Angeles, CA 90012, US

"FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Los Angeles - the City of Angels - is a city built on dreams. The dream of the immigrant seeking a new beginning, the dream of Hollywood with its promise of a life of glamour and riches, the dream of wide open spaces and sunny golden days. In the Bunker Hill/Historic Core Angels Walk you will experience these dreams in the L.A. that exists today, in an L.A. that thrived almost a century ago and in an L.A. that existed only in imagination. You'll see a Victorian's view of what a futuristic building would look like in the year 2000 and its splendors will take your breath away. Shop for pigs' snouts and exotic medicinal roots in a bustling indoor-market. Hear water fountains crash like ocean waves in a dramatic water garden that covers more than an acre. See a headless businessman take out his frustrations on an office building and see a library topped by a golden pyramid. Journey through the pages of Raymond Chandler and through the scripts of Blade Runner, Speed, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Chinatown. Ride into history on the shortest railway in the world. All this and more is here in Downtown Los Angeles within a square mile (or two). And you can see them all just by taking a short journey. Step out onto Angels Walk"

Bergamot Station

2525 Michigan Ave
Santa Monica, CA, United States

"One of L.A.'s primary cultural destinations is the Bergamot Arts Station. Home to the Santa Monica Museum of Art, this campuslike complex is a hugely popular destination for visitors from around the world. The location dates from 1875 when it was a stop for the Red Line trolley, and retains its industrial, rustic look. Filled with 20 galleries, the unique installations on display here range from photography and sculpture to interactive pieces that are both eclectic and cutting edge. Its central location allows visitors to park and spend the day seeing art rather than driving from one gallery to the next, and many pieces are available for purchase. A must-see for the arts lover."

California Science Center - Attraction - 700 Exposition Park Drive, Los Angeles, CA, United States

California Science Center

700 State Dr
Los Angeles, CA, United States

"A $130-million renovation -- reinvention, actually -- has turned the former Museum of Science and Industry into Exposition Park's most popular attraction. Using high-tech sleight of hand, the center stimulates kids of all ages with questions, answers, and lessons about the world. One of the museum's highlights is Tess, a 50-foot animatronic woman whose muscles, bones, organs, and blood vessels are revealed, demonstrating how the body reacts to a variety of external conditions and activities. (Appropriate for children of all ages, Tess doesn't possess reproductive organs.) Another highlight is the Air and Space Gallery, a seven-story space where real air- and spacecraft are suspended overhead. There are nominal fees, ranging from $2 to $5, to enjoy the science center's more thrilling attractions. You can pedal a bicycle across a high-wire suspended 43 feet above the ground (demonstrating the principle of gravity and counterweights) or get strapped into the Space Docking Simulator for a virtual-reality taste of zero gravity. There's plenty more, and plans for expansion are always in the works. The IMAX theater boasts a screen seven stories high and 90 feet wide, with state-of-the-art surround sound and 3-D technology. Films are screened throughout the day until 9pm and are nearly always breathtaking, even the two-dimensional ones."
