"*P&D* favorite! Welcome to the Haight Street stratosphere. It's still refreshing and nostalgic walking into this place knowing technology has not put them under yet. And, I always get a buzz thinking about all genres and subcultures brought together under one roof. There's no place else like this on earth. Lots of vinyl. Huge used CD space. They have VHS goodness but not sure of 8 track or DAT. You cannot go wrong with the bargain bin! Some of my favorite albums can be found for $1.99 and it's unopened!! Why it's only $1.99 and still available is beyond me, but I don't care!! I truly love the little book they put out every so often of their picks for the year. Some really obscure stuff that you would never think to have bless your ears, but I'm always pleasantly surprised. You'll get lost in there... in a good way. Sometimes we all need to get lost every now and then and Amoeba is the perfect place to do so. by: D"

"*A D favorite!* Please allow me to live in an open, window clad, cement flooring loft space in Austria and allow me to decorate with ceramic and floral joys from BellJar! Allow me to start a collection of milk jugs and apothecary jars. I never knew that I needed a throw pillow with a stitched hedgehog or a review of my elementary education in a read entitled, "Homework for Adults"? I never knew until I found myself succumbing to the merchandising/home decorating God's of BellJar. When I play the lottery, part of my spending inspiration lies within BellJar. "*A D favorite!* I wish I could live in this precious little boutique with all its woodsy charm! A small, mom and pop's cool daughter shop that's absolutely heart tickling! Walk in and "touch, touch, touch" away; no one will tell you to stop. Doe wants you to explore every corner of their shop. Oh my what a heaven for unique gifts for the chica that has everything (i.e. me), baby onesies for the hipster kid and entirely unnecessary home items that you can't live without! If you're lucky, perhaps you'll stroll in on the day they serve champagne and chocolate eclairs. And, yes, the champagne and eclairs are served free of charge. Oh my... I'm getting excited, just thinking about the giclee I must have to post in my powder room! by: D"

"*A P favorite!* Essentially a toy shop for adults. And no, I don't mean that kind. They could call this place, "Stuff you don't need" and I would still want/buy it! Quite possibly one of my favorite little stores in the world. They cater to many of my guilty pleasures: indie comics, design books, art, cool tees, and all different flavors of doodads and whutzits and thingamaboppers and assorted knick-knackery. I could little spend all day in here. Okay maybe not, it's pretty small, I'd want to get some fresh air eventually. I've bought countless cool tees from here, Star Wars memorabilia, the DJ Bruce Lee Hoodie and a Nikki McClure print for Danielle. Their magazine, Giant Robot, is choice bathroom reading material, FYI. by: P"

"*A P favorite!* You have to think about Huf in the context it's meant to be evaluated in. It is a boutique which caters to a nouveau hip-hop crowd who spends money on fitted caps and neons. They have aided in creating a look within San Francisco's youth (the twenties and thirties crowd). The store is hip-hop, no one is bringing you a lemon slice and a water, however, they might tell you about a Theophilus London or Diz Gibran track. Need I mention it is retail, a million people stop just to look. So call it what is: an artistic, music, fad fueled boutique, making its way in a very urban city. by: P"

Plant'it Earth

"*P&D* favorite! Our thumb is not green, nor is any other finger of ours. The plant loving pros that dwell within this store space are organic, aquaponic, hydroponic and every other ...ponic auficianados. They'll tell you, "No, that can't survive in your living room with only 1.34 hours of sun and 2 cups of water every 2.5 days." They have plants and soil mastered to the tee, it's beyond horticulture studies with these peeps. We have yet to purchase any greenery. Our pride and lack of plant know how prevents us from bowing down to the Plant'it Earth gurus. But, that doesn't mean we love this space any less. They take displaying plants to a whole new level and the french bulldog patrolling the scene makes the grounds that much more appealing. Our first plant purchase should be a succulent? We can't kill that, right? Do we get an kind of points for knowing what a succulent is? by: D"

"*P&D* favorite! Classic and "must do" site for a trip to San Francisco. The history of the island is really fascinating. Starts back in the civil war era, to the prison era and a final chapter on the Indian takeover. There is a brief introduction made by a ranger when you get off the boat, and then I recommend you stop up the ramp to the left and go in and see the movie. Only 17 minutes long, it is a good way to get a summary of its history and life. Then up the hill to the prison. There a lots of paths below the prison that take you around the island and well worth the effort. Walking around the island is fascinating itself. Great views of the city of San Francisco, Angel Island, North and East Bay. The prison tour with headphones is the best tour option! They've done a nice job in having a visitor get the "feel" of prison life. Lots of stories from it's past, and Frank, the ex-prison guard, is still in the store at the end of the tour autographing his book. Much more frail now, I'm sure. Alemany Farmer's Market

100 Alemany Boulevard
San Francisco, CA 94110, United States
(415) 647-9423

"*A P favorite!* Smart Ideas! 1. Don't drive here! (The 23 bus goes right by it. Others nearby.) 2. Compare prices around the market. (Some are definitely lower than others, though the whole market tends to be reasonably priced.) 3. Be prepared for more of a market experience, personal space may be hard to come by if you want your veggies! (Push in there!) 4. If you don't see an organic sign ask the vendor if they use pesticides, many don't spray. If the vendor is cagey about answering you might not want to buy there anyways. Fun Tips! 1. Try the tamales (I love 'em!) 2. Shop here on a Saturday, keep a list of what you bought, then shop at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Compare the differences. Sometimes the same vendors charge different prices at different farmers markets. (Sneaky-sneaky ::rubbing hands together::) This farmer's market holds a dear place in Pat's heart. Many weekends were spent here with his parents and brothers hustling veggies for dinero. Even if parking is a nightmare, we still heart the Saturday and Sunday tradition! I heard somewhere that this farmers market is the oldest in the city? Anyone know for sure?! by: D"

The views of the Bridge, the views of the Exploratorium, the warming hutt are all reasons to return time and time again with Pat, a blanket, sunscreen, bbbiiiggg shades and Turbolena to do some great people watching with postcard shots as the backdrop. By the way, this is the best place to have a birthday party with pinatas and Mini Sofia champagne! by:D"

"*P&D* favorite! The Ferry Building is the Disneyland of the organic food movement. Over-priced, totally snobby, overly merchandised, totally crowded 24/7. All negatives but we're still drawn to the place like kids to sugar. There's something about the perfect apples, the floral arrangements, the fat-free-cellulite-free-guilt-free gelato, the spatula bouquets at Sur La Table that keep 415 residents from near and far returning to stroll the walkway of organics. For the total experience take the ferry in and take your time. by:D"
