Gitanos'

Herald Avenue
Corner Brook, NL, Canada

"Gitanos' (pronounced He - tanos) is Spanish for gypsies (or in this case, the place of many gypsies), a nomadic people thought to have originated in Egypt in the 9th century and known to live in urban environments in Europe and North America. Gypsies are known as travelers who select ideas and goods from various cultures and redistribute them in other, often remote, communities. In spite of their exposure to other cultures, gypsies are still identified as a people who value free- dom, independence, and joie d' vie. That attitude toward life reflects our approach to food and hospitality. The Spanish translation was chosen as a salute to the country often associated with gypsies, and to the Spanish writer, Isabel Allende, who wrote a wonderful book, Aphrodite, wherein she waxed with poetic eloquence on the sensuality of food, wine and love - arguably, the only components of a good life and for sure the measure of good restaurant. El Jaleo is a spanish word that has a meaning similar to "Olay!", the spontaneous clapping and shouting at the apex of a performance. We hope that your experience at Gitanos' can be expressed as EI Jaleo!"
