"Located in the heart of Charleston’s historic district, this prominent landmark provides a spectacular view of Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor, where the Ashley and Cooper rivers empty into the Atlantic Ocean. It was first used as a public garden in 1837. With the outbreak of the Civil War, it became a fortification for the city. Visitors today also find an impressive display of weaponry used to shell and defend the city. In the early 1720s, the infamous "gentleman" pirate Stede Bonnet was hanged here with about 50 others like him. Townspeople filled the gallows area and jeered as the outlaw was brought to his rightful end. Bonnet was buried in the nearby marsh. His epitaph has been memorialized and stands today in the park. Tourists and locals seem to agree that the Battery is the city's best spot for strolling. Maybe it's the live oaks drooping with Spanish moss, the pleasant ocean breezes, or the lovely views of Charleston Harbor. The Battery is also home to some of the city's most lavish residences, including the historic Edmonston-Alston house, the Calhoun Mansion and the Palmer Home (also known as the Pink Palace)."

"83-107 East Bay Street Concern for the needless destruction of historical buildings inspired the forming of the Society for Preservation of Old Dwelling Houses, in 1920, still functioning today as the Preservation Society. In 1931 Dorothy Legge purchased 99 and 101 East Bay, beginning the renovation of the area between Tradd and Elliot Streets. Originally these mid-1700 homes had been the center of commerce; merchants had stores on the first floor and lived on the floors above. Neglect over time left these valuable buildings in a state of disrepair. The purchase and restoration by Mrs. Legge inspired others, and today this beautiful array of homes is known as "Rainbow Row". These old row houses are very popular to Charleston. They represent the very first style of Charleston homes and are portrayed in the story of Porgie and Bess."

"Charleston Waterfront Park is a 12-acre park which serves as a transition between the historic residential, business, government and tourist districts of the city. Located along the salt-water marshes of the Cooper River, the park includes a 400-foot-long wharf and fishing pier with shade structures, riverside promenade, lawns and formal gardens, tree-shaded walking and seating areas, and two major fountains. The park’s main entrance features a large paved plaza with a fountain surrounded by decorative walls with ornamental iron fencing. Building upon 939 ninety-foot concrete piles, the park provides 3,558 linear feet of access to the harbor. There are 150 Charleston benches and 3,000 linear feet of seating walls. Planting within the park includes 185 large trees, 750 azaleas, 2,000 boxwood, 216 large shrubs, more than 5,000 flowers, 12,000 square feet of ground cover, and one acre of grass lawn. In designing the park the city commissioned the architects to consider the park in the context of this section of the peninsula city. The result was a master plan which has provided the frame work for an extraordinary redevelopment of this important section of Charleston. Charleston Waterfront Park strengthens pedestrian use of the city by residents and visitors alike. The development and redevelopment has substantially added to the city’s tax base. Most important, however, is the park itself--a place of beauty, providing for all time, for all citizens and visitors, a matchless vista of a beautiful harbor."
