Amalfi

84011 Amalfi Salerno
Amalfi, Campania, IT

"Further along the coast is the town of Amalfi, which has given its name to the stretch of coast. It’s a rather Spanish looking town of tall white houses, built on rocks facing the bay. Here you can climb the steep flight of steps to the Duomo in the main piazza of the town. Getting there: Take the SITA bus from Sorrento train station (they depart approximately every 30 minutes)."

Attraction:

Optional Boat Trip to Capri - Attraction - Capri NA, Capri, Campania, IT

Capri

80073 Capri Naples
Capri, Campania, IT

"A visit to this beautiful island is a must while staying in Sorrento. A full day on the island is recommended. Options are to catch a boat from Marina Grande around the island, a highlight of which is a visit to the famous Blue Grotto. Walk up the pier towards the funicular railway. This runs from the port up to Capri town. It is the easiest way of getting to Capri town. Walk to Villa Jovis, once the retirement home of Emperor Tiberius. This will take at least a 30-minute walk from the main square. You can take the public bus from Capri town to the town of Anacapri and from Anacapri you can then take a chairlift to Monte Salaro. The view from the top of the mountain is stunning. Getting there: From Sorrento Port you can either take the Hydrofoil (Gescab) or Fast Ferry (Caremar) to Capri Island. There are plenty of ticket desks at the port."

Attraction:

Herculaneum - Attraction - Herculaneum Naples, Herculaneum, Campania, IT

Herculaneum

Herculaneum Naples
Herculaneum, Campania, IT

"Herculaneum (Ercolano in modern Italian) is an ancient Roman town, located in the territory of the current commune of Ercolano. It is most famous for having been lost, along with Pompeii, in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, which buried Herculaneum in volcanic mud. Since the discovery of bones in 1981, some 150 skeletons have been found. Getting there: Take the Cirumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Ercolano, departs approximately every 20-30 minutes. Journey time is 50 minutes."

Attraction:

Ischia - Attraction - 80077 Ischia Naples, Ischia, Campania, IT

Ischia

80077 Ischia Naples
Ischia, Campania, IT

"The biggest and busiest Island in the Bay of Naples. It is a volcanic island which is almost entirely mountainous. Popular for its thermal hot springs and volcanic mud! Getting there: There is just one ferry per day which departs from Sorrento port at 9.30am and returns from Ischia at 17.20 (changeable for next season so check times)."

Attraction:

Mount Vesuvius - Attraction - Ercolano, Campania, Italy

Mount Vesuvius

Ercolano, Campania, Italy

"It is the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe. Vesuvius is at present dormant, after the last disastrous eruption of 1944 when streams of lava poured down its sides and showered Naples and surrounding towns with pebbles and mud. It is possible to climb up the 860m path to the crater (don't wear flip-flops!). Getting there: Take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Pompeii and then take a bus from there to the crater car park."

Attraction:

Pompeii - Attraction - 80045 Pompei Naples, Pompei, Campania, IT

Pompeii

80045 Pompei Naples
Pompei, Campania, IT

"Pompeii was not only a flourishing port, but a prosperous resort with many villas. An earthquake in AD 63 did much damage, and an eruption of Mt Vesuvius in AD 79 buried Pompeii under cinders and ashes that preserved the ruins of the city with magnificent completeness, which can be seen today. Getting there: Take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Pompeii, they depart approximately every 20-30 minutes. Journey time is 30 minutes."

Attraction:

Positano - Attraction - 84017 Positano Salerno, Positano, Campania, IT

Positano

84017 Positano Salerno
Positano, Campania, IT

"The Amalfi Coast is a stunning coastal drive, taking in the village of Positano. The drive along the Amalfi coastline offers some of the most breath-taking coastal scenery in Europe. The former fishing village of Positano is one of the main resorts on the Amalfi coast. Its location is quite marvellous, heaped up in a pyramid high above the water. Getting there: Take the SITA bus from Sorrento train station (they depart approximately every 30 minutes)."
