The Plantation encompasses 25 acres of land owned by the non-profit Oak Alley Plantation Foundation. 75 of the surrounding acres are residential homes, 600 acres are leased for sugar cane cultivation and 450 acres are still virgin woodlands. Jacques Telesphore Roman, a wealthy Creole sugar planter, built the present-day mansion in 1839."
