"The Gibbes Museum of Art is truly a gem in downtown Charleston. The combination of a gorgeous art museum paired with a beautiful outdoor courtyard gives guests a unique use of indoor and outdoor space. I highly recommended renting the entire museum space if plannong on >200 guests. *I strongly encourage the use of an outside planner to further cooridnate the space with the in-house event planner. We did! Many art exhibits may have to be moved to cooridnate your indoor ceremony and/or reception."

"Art by Charleston artists as well as of Charleston aristocrats from back in the day and famous artists inspired by Charleston. Worth investigating if you're into art."

Charleston Wedding In October
Charleston   |   October, 2011   |   Museums and Galleries

"Located in the Charleston Historic District, the Gibbes houses a premier collection of over 10,000 works of fine art, principally American works, many with a connection to Charleston or the South. The benefactor, James Shoolbred Gibbes, donated $100,000 to the Carolina Arts Association upon his death in 1899 for the "erection of a suitable building for the exhibitions of paintings". Not receiving the money until 1903, the Association hired Frank Pierce Milburn to design the gallery. His design included a Tiffany-style dome, Doric columns and pediment capped windows and doors. The museum's collections include the work of numerous artists with connections to Charleston; among them are Henrietta Johnston, Mary Roberts, and Jeremiah Theus."
