"Island located in the San Francisco Bay which is part of the Golden gate national recreational area. Nicknamed the 'Rock' it was America's ultimate prison! Often descibed as inescapable eep!"
Church Of The Nativity Wedding In June
"Alcatraz and history go hand in hand. Once home to some of America's most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to the Rock. The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety. To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons."

"*P&D* favorite! Classic and "must do" site for a trip to San Francisco. The history of the island is really fascinating. Starts back in the civil war era, to the prison era and a final chapter on the Indian takeover. There is a brief introduction made by a ranger when you get off the boat, and then I recommend you stop up the ramp to the left and go in and see the movie. Only 17 minutes long, it is a good way to get a summary of its history and life. Then up the hill to the prison. There a lots of paths below the prison that take you around the island and well worth the effort. Walking around the island is fascinating itself. Great views of the city of San Francisco, Angel Island, North and East Bay. The prison tour with headphones is the best tour option! They've done a nice job in having a visitor get the "feel" of prison life. Lots of stories from it's past, and Frank, the ex-prison guard, is still in the store at the end of the tour autographing his book. Much more frail now, I'm sure. Side-note: Make reservations in advance using the website: http://www.alcatrazcruises.com/website/buy-tickets.aspx by: D"

"Some reading this BELONG here !! The picture I'm adding is not one taken of "the ROCK". It's actually a picture of "the ROW" (Where I was imprisoned for eight years). Okay it's my childhood school, same principle different inmates. I escaped at fourteen and didn't have to swim !!"

"Alcatraz Island offers a close-up look at the site of the first lighthouse and US fort on the West Coast, the infamous federal penitentiary long off-limits to the public, and the 18 month occupation by Indians of All Tribes which saved the tribes. Rich in history, there is also a natural side to the Rock - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare."

"Alcatraz, also known as "The Rock" was America's premier maximum-security prison. This Federal Penitentiary was the final stop for the nation's most incorrigible inmates from the mid-1930's until the mid-1960's."
Meaghan and Tony's Wedding
