You cannot find a better example of The Gilded Age than the Marble House on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. It was built as a summer cottage between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt. This stone palace set the tone for social and architectural change in the former wooden house summer colony of Newport.
