"The William G. Mather Museum, located just north of the Great Lakes Science Center in downtown Cleveland, is a retired 1925 Great Lakes bulk freighter, permanently docked and open to visitors between early May and late October. Touring this historic ship is a wonderful way to learn more about life and commerce on the Great Lakes. What is the William G. Mather?: The Williams G. Mather is an authentic 1925 vintage Great Lakes bulk freighter, a reminder of the golden years of Great Lakes shipping. She was built in Detroit to be the flagship of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company (now Cleveland Cliffs, Inc.). The ship, named for the company's owner, was state-of-the-art at the time and noted for its elegant accommodations and power. More about the William G. Mather: The William G. Mather is 618 feet long and 62 feet wide. The ship has a 14,000 ton capacity and was one of the first Great Lakes freighters to be equipped with radar. The William G. Mather remained the company's flagship until 1955 and stayed in service until 1980. The William G. Mather Museum is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm in May, September, and October. The museum is open daily 10am - 5pm in June, July, and August. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors (aged 60 and older), and $4 for children ages 5-18 and students will a valid college ID. Children under 5 are admitted FREE.
