"This "Curved" bay was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. This is THE BEST protected cove if you are new to scuba diving or snorkeling with a diverse population of marine life and a large, rich coral reef. Advanced snorkelers and divers can also enjoy the beauty of this bay as the reef extends throughout the cove into deeper water. The bay floor is actually the crater of an ancient volcano that flooded when the exterior wall collapsed and the ocean rushed in. There is a large sandy beach perfect for sunbathing, relaxing and picnicing. Several hiking trails extend along coastline and along the ridge overlooking the bay providing breathtaking lookouts."

Honolulu Wedding In August
"http://oahu.aloha-hawaii.com/dining/hanauma+bay/ Legend has it that two princes fell deeply in love with the most beautiful maiden in Hawai‘i, Keohinani. Her father, Keanamo‘o, was the guardian of Hanauma Bay. Her hand in marriage was to be decided by a contest of strength. All day the two men struggled to prove their greatness yet each was equally strong. Keohinani loved both men and it pained her to see them suffer. As the contest continued she climbed to the top of the crater, she called out to the gods to transform her into a hill, so the pain and suffering will stop. Instantly, she was transformed into part of the crater, to the hill today called "fair mountain", Kohelepelepe, where the modern day radar station stands. Her unselfish deed allowed her suitors to gaze with awe upon her beauty forever. Her father, deeply moved and pleased by his daughter’s humble act of kindness transformed himself into the crater rim above her and encircled Hanauma Bay in the form of a great lizard. When you visit, make sure to look for the beautiful Keohinani and her father Keanamo‘o"
