During your stay in Florida, we really recommend taking a trip over to St. Armand's Circle in Sarasota. There are tons of restaurants and shopping and the beach is within walking distance -- So you can make a whole day out of it! HINT: You HAVE to get breakfast at the Blue Dolphin Cafe. It is a really small restaurant and sometimes there is a long wait, but it is SO worth it! We also recommend Cha Cha Coconut's (If you want a relaxed atmosphere with yummy drinks and a live guitar/steel drum player) and Tommy Bahamas (usually a long wait but the food is excellent). For desert, make sure you head over to Kilwin's. I guarantee it's the best ice cream you'll ever have! They hand make all of their chocolates right in the middle of the store as well -- Which is really neat to watch.
