"Section of this street is referred to as the "crookedest street in the world." If you are planning on seeing this street. Park a block or 2 and walk down Lombard instead. The line of cars waiting to drive on Lombard can be seen for blocks."

"Lombard Street is best known for the one-way[2] section on Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, in which the roadway has eight sharp turns (or switchbacks) that have earned the street the distinction of being "the crookedest [most winding] street in world."[3] The switchbacks design, first suggested by property owner Carl Henry[citation needed] and instituted in 1922,[4] was born out of necessity in order to reduce the hill's natural 27% grade,[citation needed] which was too steep for most vehicles to climb. It is also a serious hazard to pedestrians, who are accustomed to a more reasonable sixteen-degree incline. The crooked section of the street, which is about 1/4 mile (400 m) long, is reserved for one-way traffic traveling east (downhill) and is paved with red bricks. The speed limit in this section is a mere 5 mph (8 km/h)."

"Lombard Street is known as the world's 'crookedest' street. Looking down on Lombard Street gives a nice view of the San Francisco Bay, Treasure Island, Coit Tower, and the Bay Bridge. It was built in the mid-1920s to accommodate the steepness of the slope."

"This picturesque stretch of Lombard Street has eight angles along a single block. They twist at very acute angles, making for very slow going if you are in a car, though, oddly enough, cars were the reason for designing the street this way back in 1922, the idea being that this design would make it easier for them to negotiate the steep 16-percent grade. The drive is usually bumper-to-bumper and in the summertime, there is almost always a line of cars waiting to take the drive down, so a stroll is a good option, especially when the hydrangeas along the sidewalk are in bloom."
