Chinatown is simply one of those places that you can't leave San Francisco without visiting. Home to one of the largest and oldest Chinese-American populations outside of China, the historic and cultural imprint is still palpable on the streets, with Chinese markets emitting the smell of smoked duck, the percussive sound of Mandarin Chinese, and the sight of the many pagoda-style buildings lining the alleys. Historically this was one of the seediest areas of the city, with opium dens and brothels catering to the lax mores of the Gold Rush era. Today, this is a place where tourists buy porcelain statues, Oriental home furnishings, and other tchotchkes. However, Chinatown has not merely become a tourist theme park; in many areas, English is not spoken, signs are in Chinese, and local families can be seen enjoying the most authentic Dim Sum in the United States. Located right between Financial District and North Beach, this is one of the most central and unique areas in the Bay Area. In Chinatown's winding alleys you will find many landmarks, such as the Fortune Company Factory and the Tin How Temple.
