I often use Mr and Mrs Steinle's Wedding and Reception as a great example about DJing. I find two types of clients; those who know some of the music they want and ask for me to help fill in the blanks and those who know every song they want. Bret & Serena gave me a specific playlist that I did not deviate from except when Brett's father wanted to hear Old Time Rock and Roll. I often hear complaints about DJ's in that they feel insulted when people tell them what to play. That sentiment confuses me as I understand that this is my client/employer's day and they know what they and their guests want. I am often the stranger in the room and in life you only get one chance to make a first impression so knowing what people want ahead of time accelerates the learning curve, cementing success and satisfaction because in the end my goal is complete satisfaction from my clients. That's how I've stayed in business for more than 15 years.
