Farmer's Market at dusk
Before there was a Farmers Market on this corner, Arthur Fremont Gilmore ran a dairy farm here. After he struck oil, his son E. B. Gilmore opened the country's first self-serve gas station, a "gas-a-teria" at 3rd & Fairfax. These pumps pay tribute to his part in the market's story.

The original Farmer's Market, LA's oldest outdoors market, which began as a dairy farm, now has over 100 shops, restaurants and grocers and is a great place to people watch. The Grove is a shopping and entertainment complex built adjacent to the historic Farmer's Market. It centers with a dancing fountain. It's become a popular spot for shopping and dining, and its lively crowds and street grid layout making it feel like an old-fashioned downtown.
