Need Ceremony/Reception Venue Selection Help (Charleston, SC)!

197278

I am planning a destination wedding (I currently live in Ga) in Charleston, SC for sometime next year. I am having a great deal of trouble finding the perfect venue for both my ceremony and reception because I would love to have them at the same location. My vision is outdoors under live oaks and a tent reception! I have the Legare Waring House on hold for June 25, 2011 but I am fearing it will just be too hot and my fiance does not want to sweat throughout our wedding! Would that be miserable? (I'm not too familiar with the typical weather there.)Does anyone have any other suggestions that might not be as well known and might be available? I waited until I finished college to start planning and now it seems that EVERYTHING is booked! Any help would be appreciated!

Depends on the number of guests you will have, but you can look into the Wickliffe House. Also the Confederate Home on Broad St is nice for a smaller number. There is a nice garden there with a big oak tree (it is where we are having our ceremony) and then they have a big double parlor room inside that could be an indoor reception space. The rental fee for Confederate Home is also tax deductible b/c it is a non-profit organization! The Thomas Bennett House is another great one, but a little pricey, and then a little out of the downtown area is Lowndes Grove Plantation. It will be pretty miserably humid in late June, so if you had a short ceremony outside and then did indoors for reception then it wouldn't be too bad.

We had our wedding on July 25, 2009 at Rivertowne Country Club. It was perfect. Outside ceremony, inside reception. They worked with our budget and Lacy Davidson is awsome.

Outdoors in late June is oppressive in the Lowcountry of South Carolina! If you would be open to a separate but very close location for your ceremony and reception, there are a number of possibilities. Trinity UMC on Meeting St. is very close to Charleston Place (2 blocks)and the Francis Marion Hotel (1 Block)is a possibility. Bethel UMC and Circular Congregational are both close to reception venues. I noticed Lowndes Grove mentioned in a previous response. It is a literal Plantation House located in town and is an excellent choice for both reception and ceremony! It is not that far from the Historic District (5 minutes). I CAN PROMISE YOU THIS...YOU WILL SWEAT IF YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE AN OUTDOOR WEDDING IN LATE JUNE. MOVE THE CEREMONY INDOORS! YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID.

I agree that you will sweat. I think the only time of day you would have a chance of not sweating would be at dawn.

We just got married Sept 5th at the Carriage House at the Magnolia Plantation. It was hot (85 degrees or more that day), but only for the 30 minutes of the ceremony and the groom survived just fine and our guests said they were comfortable. (He was so intent on looking at the bride that he didn't notice he was warm.) We purposely told people to dress for the weather and the bride chose a lighter weight dress. The ceremony started at 6PM, so heat was going down by then and by evening it was perfect. We did avoid the hurricane by a hair, however... The facility was wonderful and air-conditioned inside. We had cocktails hour on the patio and then dinner and dancing inside. June, however, will likely be HOT. Check out the average temps in Charleston to see what you will be dealing with. Think INSIDE if you can. Also, highly recommend that you chose a wedding planner who is local and can assist with the venue location and all your details. We used Elisabeth Toms (you can find her on the web) and she was awesome and not overly priced for all that she accomplished.
