Has anyone who isnt a resident ever been married in one of the Catholic Churches?

We just got engaged in Savannah two weeks ago-- and are so thrilled!! We are in love with the city and want to get married here... Only problem is... none of the Catholic churches will marry us because we arent members of the church! Has anyone been able to get around this? Or have any ideas on what to do? We are willing to do anything!!! We want to get married in May 2010! Please help!!!!!!

Are either of you a member of a Catholic church that is part of the Diocese of Savannnah (which includes 90 counties in Georgia)? If yes, you can be married at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
If not, join a church now!
We ran into the same problem, with having to be a member of the church to get married there but were saved by the groom being part of a church in the Diocese of Savannah.

Thank you for your quick response! It could be any church? How long did you attend? We live in Florida.. So we are not apart of any church in Georgia.

You may be out of luck. Check with your church in Florida. If you are from another diocese but have a family or personal connection with the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, then you could get married there. Maybe you can work with your priest to pull some strings.

As a back-up plan, the Whitefield chapel out at Bethesda's Boys Home where we were married allows serves as just a chapel. You bring in your own minister, which allowed us to plan our ceremony more tailored to us (I'm Methodist, husband is Catholic). Hope this helps and good luck with the wedding! Congratulations a million times over!

Thank you - if you need pictures, I have plenty! It is incredibly charming and very reasonable. Most of the Deen family was married there, but I like the tradition roots of the south that it evoke.

Blessings on your wedding day!
