Hi LIz,

My fiance and I are getting married in Cartagena in January. We went in Febraury and fell in love with the city. It was the perfect venue for our wedding. I will be more than happy to help you in any way. We have a wedding planner down there that is AMAZING. I absolutely recommend her.

First, congrats on your engagement! How did you decide on Cartagena? My fiance and I spent several weeks in and around the city a few years ago, and it came to mind instantly when we were discussing wedding locales. I checked out your Wedding Mapper, which looks great! How did you find your wedding planner? Also, how big will your wedding be? I'd love to hear more about it all...

I am currently working/doing research with a bride on her destination wedding to Cartagena, Colombia as well. I think its awesome that someone finally put a posting up about this. Would anyone mind swapping information, venues and etc during the planning process? As I will do the same. By the way she will be getting married in August 2010, but other than that I would have to say that the place is absolutely amazing! I'm so happy that she chose that place. Hope we all can chat...my email is simplyuniqueweddingsandevents@inbox.com

Thanks alot!

My fiance and I knew that we wanted a destination wedding. We live in Miami. He is cuban and my family is colombian. We looked at some islands in the carribbean but they lacked the latin flair we wanted. A friend had just gotten back from vacation in Cartagena and suggested we look into it. We did some research and instantly were intersted in the city as our wedding venue.
I found several couples on line that got married in cartagena. Once couple in particular was from MIami so I reached out to her. She recommended her wedding planner in Cartagena. Her nickname is Chiche. We contacted her. Coincidentally she was going to be on vacation in Miami the following week so we met her in person in Miami. We LOVED her. We schedule a meeting in Cartagena. We flew in Thursday and left Monday. Chiche arranged for us to see all 5 churches, 20 wedding venues, meet with the musicians, hair people, florist, caterers, etc. We did everything in 4 days. We dont have to go back until our wedding week.

The city is amazing. It is old world romance. It is great. People may be concerned that it is dangerous in colombia. Cartagena could not be further from that. It you are interested in learning more about what we are going for our wedding, please feel free to broswe our website www.margauxandjorge@miami.edu.

Let me know if you need any other information!

Sorry, I forgot to answer some of your questions. Initially we thought our wedding was going to be 60-80. Now we think it is going to be 100-120. More people are intersted in attending that we initally thought. Obviously it is cheaper to have a wedding in Colombia than in the States, especially Miami.

Hi,

My fiance and I are thinking of getting married in Cartagena next summer (August 2010) and would love to contact your wedding planner Chiche. Also, how much do you think we should expect to budget for a 50-100 guests? Just wondering how much it typically costs per person in Cartagena vs. California, and what that all includes. How is the weather in the summer? Do you need to worry about hurricanes?

Thanks so much!

Hi-

I'm glad we have more people planning weddings in Cartagena! So exciting!

Hey Margaux-
I went to your site and its unavailable, is there an error or anoter way to get to it. Even though I'm a planner myself I would love to get ahold of the planner there so that we could possibly work together on making my client happy. Thanks so much in advance!

So far the planning is going great and I find after working budget that it is a litle cheaper to have a wedding there than in the states. =)

Hi Ladies,

Our wedding Planner is Carmen Cecilia Canyon, nickname Chiche. Her email address is lachichecayon@hotmail.com. Please feel free to contact her. Let her know that we recommended you.

We are spending $175ish per person. However, this includes various events. A welcome cocktail reception ($20 p/p), the rehearsal dinner ($40 p/p), the wedding ($100 p/p) and a farewell brunch ($15 p/p). We have selected the most expensive venue for our wedding - The Sofitel Santa Clara. You can tailor your wedding to suite any of your needs and budget. Having a wedding in Miami would run us $175 a person at least. We decided to have a destination wedding and get more for our money by hosting various events. However, you can have an amazing wedding for $50 per person.

The main area you will save money on is alcohol. Most venues will allow you to bring our own alcohol. Chiche quoted us that buying our own alcohol for 7 hours of open bar for 100 people would be 1k. this in unbelievable since paying a hotel for 4 hours of open bar can easily run you $70 per person. the thing to consider is that any venue or catering company will charge you a corking fee. Still, it comes out cheaper!

There are numerous venues in Cartagena. Any nook in the city can be reserved for your wedding. There are tons of venues, hotels, restaurants, public areas that would be great for a wedding. Cartagena is a party city and they utilize every space of it.

Our website is www.margauxandjorge.com. Not sure why it came out funky on the last posting.

As far as hurricanes, hurricane season is june-november. August does fall in the span but I have no idea how Cartagena has been with Hurricanes in the past. The temperature is always tropical. It is hot and sunny year round. You might want to see the average temperature in august on weather.com.

If you guys want to chat more about this on the phone, that would be fine with me. I think Cartgaena is amazing and I am a huge advocate for it. However, you have to determine if its a right fit for you. Hope this helps!

Thank you sooooo much! This was hugely helpful and it really pointed my fiance and I in the right direction! We were sort of walking blind, so thank you!

I'm going to check out your website (congrats again!) and email your planner. I just had a couple quick clarification questions.

1) Did the $175/person include the Reception Dinner or the Rehearsal Dinner? I know you wrote Rehearsal but I'm wondering then what your Reception Dinner would have cost or if this was just a typo?

2) Also, was this price quoted because all of your guests are staying at The Sofitel Santa Clara or is this the price regardless? I know I have some friends who won't be able to afford that gorgeous hotel for their accommodation so I'm just wondering if that ups the wedding package price per person?

3) Are you using a local photographer, and if so who, or are you flying someone in from Miami? My fiance and I are both pro photographers so our expectations are pretty high. That said, we can't afford a $5500 photo team plus 2 flights from LA + hotels in Cartagena. At the very least, we thought a Miami photographer's flight would be half as expensive. Just wondering if you're using someone from Miami or Cartagena.

Again, thank you sooo much! We really appreciate your help! It sounds like you're going to have an incredible day! If you want to talk on the phone, email me directly at kchristensenphotos@gmail.com and I'll message back with my number.

One more thing ... YOU TWO ARE THE COOLEST COUPLE EVER! I love, love, love your site and feel so connected to your proposal story (Tim proposed the night we moved in together with boxes and paint cans surrounding us and after a long trip to Home Depot)! Then when I saw your "Honey Fund" I almost died! This is exactly what my fiance and I have been saying we want to ask for. We have a gorgeous, bohemian pad by the beach and have always traveled the globe. Since we value experiences over materials, we've been thinking of doing something just like that for our gift registry! Anyway, awesome site! You've got me, a total stranger, pumped for your wedding so I can only imagine how thrilled your guests must be!

Just had to tell you how fantastic you both seem! Makes me so excited for all of us! Best wishes! Karen

Margaux,

Thank you very much for all the information you provided to all of us. This is really helpful and definitely got us excited about having our wedding in the beautiful city of Cartagena. I emailed your wedding planner this morning and of course informed her you were the one who recommended her. Thanks again for all your advice and info :)

The $175 included 4 events: the welcome reception (cocktails & light hor'douves at our family's house that we rented for them), the rehearsal dinner (catered buffet & cocktails, location TBA), the wedding (reception at Sofitel), and Farewell brunch (catered breakfast at the house we rented for the bridal party).

Practically no one is staying at the Sofitel. We have rented boutique hotels for the different groups attending our wedding. We are staying at a house with the bridal party (Casa del Mar). Our family is staying at a converted Masion (casa Pombo). Our college friends are staying at Casa la Fe boutique hotel. We are only have our wedding reception at the Sofitel. the other events will be in different venues. There are so many wonderful places to stay. The Sofitel is amazing but not practical if your guests are staying for 5 nights like ours are.

We are using a local photographer. Our wedding planner took us to see various vendors in Cartagena. We selected the photographer that photographed the President of Colombia's son's wedding in Cartagena last year. that was good enough for us. We really do not know alot about photograghy so we took the recommendations of our planner. The package with video is about $1300. They will stay until the party is over which in Cartagena means the wee hours of the morning. The other cool thing about the photographers is after the wedding they take you in a horse and carriage ride around town and shot photos of the couple at all the major landmarks. Like by the water, or the murallas (walled areas), the clock tower, etc.

Hi Everyone,

It is so great to see all this information about planning a wedding in Colombia. My fiance and I will be getting married in August of 2010 at El Pestagua which is absolutely BEAUTIFUL (google image it) and pretty affordable. We are on a strict budget because both of us are going back to school next year and we will be backpacking six months beforehand, but are expecting 70-80 people. We are working with Isabel at Caribe Cordial and I really like her a lot. She speaks both Spanish and English and is incredibly helpful in navigating all of this, which is great because I felt really overwhelmed when I began planning this.

My biggest concern is finding a good photographer. That is one of the most important things to me and like you Karen, I can't afford to fly someone out and pay for hotel. If anyone has any suggestions or contacts let me know. I actually have not asked Isabel about this either, but am going to send her an e-mail today and hopefully she will have some contacts that I can pass along. Another great thing is that Isabel is incredibly affordable and when I told my other friends how much I am paying for a wedding planner their mouths dropped. Thanks!

Thanks sooo much! We've been wanting to hire Colombian photographers but hadn't liked anything. Do you mind me asking what they're rate is, what it includes, and how much their prints are? I'm traveling for a couple of weeks and only have Internet on my phone so I can't see their website. Thanks! Congrats!

First, just a heads up they only speak Spanish.

They only have two packages, but to get a CD of all your photos it is only 850.00. This of course includes them being their all day on wedding day shooting every moment. An album with 200 pics is about 300.00, but it does not seem like anything fancy or comparable to some of the albums I have seen of some of the photographers in the USA. We also negotiated with them a better deal. The day before the wedding we are renting a boat for all our guests to go to the Islas de Rosario. They are going to come with us on that as well and shoot that day. We only have to pay for their hotel for an extra night.

We are paying for their tickets from Bogota to Cartagena and for their hotel. You will have to pay for this.

Hello!

I'm also having my wedding in Cartagena, from Feb 17-19. And our wedding planner is also Chiche, who is doing an awesome job. I hired a local photographer: Kiko Kairuz. There are other good photographers in Cartagena, like Antonio Florez (www.antonioflorez.com) who has a very stable and reliable style. Nevertheless, I chose Kiko for his photojournalistic style. Originally I thought of flying someone in, but after comparing the work and the prices... there is absolutely no need! Kiko is giving us an amazing price for covering the cocktail party, a full-day island trip, and the ceremony and reception.
The advantage of Kiko, Antonio or another local photographer (e.g.dukesfotografia.com) is that you do not have to fly them in or pay any acommodation.

Anyways, if any of you have some specific questions, perhaps I can help out. I went on a scouting trip to Cartagena earlier this year and now have almost everything set up for the big day in February!...

Hey everyone,

This is so exciting! When I started this topic months ago, I was nervous that I was the only person crazy enough to plan a wedding in Cartagena from the States...I actually stopped planning entirely for several months (moved to a new city, general craziness), but am more excited than ever after reading everyone's posts. Margaux, you are awesome! And I love the Carlos Vives and Juanes on your web site - genius idea. Does anyone else have a wedding site up yet?

As for my fiance and me, we are planning to make a scouting trip over the holidays. I'm crossing my fingers that we can still secure something for a wedding next June. I know at least a few places still have availability, so I'm cautiously optimistic. A question for everyone: how far in advance did you plan everything? I'm trying to get a feel for whether I'm too late in the game...

Also, more importantly, where did you opt to have the ceremonies/receptions? I'm really hoping to have an outdoor ceremony on the muralle, so any insights into how this works would be wonderful. Are there benefits to working with an independent planner, rather than someone from our hotel?

Thanks in advance. I look forward to hearing more from the expert wedding crew here :)

Best,

Liz

Hi Liz!
Thanks for starting the Cartagena Community haha.. let me tell you, it has helped us a lot. Margaux's site really inspired us along with all her tips.We started off thinking about Cartagena back in May before we got engaged but quickly scratched it off the list because i thought it would be too complicated to plan. After getting engaged in June, we thought of other possibilities like Miami, Washington DC but nothing ever really clicked for us and in August decided to go ahead pick Cartagena once and for all. As i started to do research i came across this thread and ended up contacting LA CHICHE, who is Margaux's wedding planner and she has just been amazing ever since. Unfortunately we have so much going on this year, we wont have a chance to make it there so I feel much more relieved having a planner(specially one that has been recommended by many). Our wedding will be August 14, 2010 and we are having our reception at the Clock Tower(puerta del reloj) and the ceremony at La catdreal de Cartagena. We wanted something outdoors as well that would give our guests and ourselves that magical feeling that you are for sure in Cartagena as opposed to any other place. After looking at many Casas, i was sent the Puerta del Reloj and we fell in love with it. I definitely dont think you are late in the game at all, i spoke to a bride who also used Chiche( i found her through tripadvisor) and she was telling me she was trying to plan her wedding herself, since the summer of '08 once January came around she felt so overwhelmed that she ended up contacting Chiche to help her organize her May '09 wedding. So totally go for it, i dont know how different the planning service from the hotel is from an independent planner is but our experience has been great. Good Luck with everything and definitely go for it.. you are not too late in the game.

Best Wishes,

Amelia

Hi there,

The puerta del reloj looks fantastic! If I'm not crazy, I think I bought some stuff from used book vendors who were selling there the last time I was in the city...Gorgeous, though. What an amazing idea! What sort of costs are involved in holding the ceremony in a public space like that? (While it will cost infinitely less to have a wedding in Cartagena versus the States, I have no idea what sort of sums will be involved - just that they'll look better than the alternatives! I need to start paying more attention to these things...)

Everyone, this wedding thread is going to be bad for me. I have a TON of work today, but you've all inspired me and all I want to do is plan an amazing wedding :)

Amelia, thanks so much for the link to your site! Your plans look amazing. Where will you and your family be staying? Also, a big thanks to you and Margaux for the info about Chiche. I might be contacting her, myself...

Cheers!

Hi Liz!

Here is my advice to you, Keep your OPTIONS OPEN haha. My finace and I were stuck on having it at a casa and didnt want to bother with anything else but the casas were more expensive because they usually want you to rent out the full house for a min of 3 nights (most cases) and for me some of the houses just didnt have the space i wanted for dancing. So it took us forever and i was getting frustrated. While i was talking to the caterer, who works closely with Chiche she ended up sending me pictures of different locations incase i wanted to have any other pre wedding event, one of the pictures was la puerta del reloj and we absolutely fell in love with it. The way they explained it to me is its on the second level, so you are away from the vendors and you have the whole space to yourself. WE ended up reserving it through Chiche and she said it was a great choice and it would be less expensive than any other casa. Basically the extra costs are lighting and plants but i still havent gotten a quote for that, so i dont know how much the total for it will be. We wanted a small fun pretty wedding and our budget is relatively small but we have gotten so much for our money, that it would be impossible to have anything like that here in the states.
So we still havent decided where the family will stay because my side of the family loves the beach and they rather be staying on the beachside, so they are looking into renting apartments. My fiancee wants everyone to stay in the walled city but i keep telling him he cant obligate people to stay where he wants haha... but i think we might stay at casa curato? its not set in stone yet, so things may change. What have you thought in regards to that? This whole wedding planning can really take all your time haha but its fun!!!!

GOod luck and let me know if you need anything else!

Amelia

So much information!

We are having our wedding at Casa Pestagua (http://www.casapestagua.com/en/index.html) and are only renting it out for the ceremony and reception for a very reasonable price. We are having the ceremony in the picture of the room attached and the reception in the patio. Right now our wedding planner and I are working with them on a menu, but so far the options have been great. I am not a food snob by any means, but I do care about having good Carribean Colombian food.

Our friends are renting out a couple of houses in the walled city , but most of our family who has kids are going to stay at the Hilton so we are going to reserve a block of rooms. La Cameron is another great family option.

katamayorga,

Thank you so much for your info. We are also thinking about having our wedding at Casa Pestagua. Just to be clear, are they renting out the space to you just for the event it self (a few hours)? They are not asking you to rent out the entire house for the night? We have not inquire about the price, but if you do not mine me asking. How much as they asking for?

Thank you so much!!

Thanks guys for all your help, it has been quite helpful as my fiance and I are also planning on having our wedding in Cartagena. It seems like we all are going to have a blast at our weddings!! I have couples questions for you. The $100p/p for the wedding you quoted, does that price include renting out the space, catering, food and drinks, tables and chairs, and flower arrangements? Would that same price concept apply to your other events? Thanks again and hope to hear from you....:)

Take care

Hi Renteria,

We are actually just renting out the main courtyard and salon for the event. But Casa Pestagua just changed management and they have decided to not do this for events anymore. Many guest were complaining about not being able to use the main space while there were events and the noise, so the new management has made it mandatory that you rent out the whole house. We are actually considering this now because we have negotiated with them a pretty reasonable price to rent out the whole house for one night. But since we signed a contract we still have the option of just renting out the salon and main courtyard for just that night.

They gave us a deal of about 7,400,000 pesos and we negotiated it down to 6,600,000 pesos.

We have done a lot of this coordination and negotiation through our wedding planner in Cartagena. Since we are most likely going ot rent out the whole place we will be looking for other areas to cut costs. She has been pretty helpful in all of this and finding vendors within our budget. I highley suggest getting a reliable wedding planner. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey!

Great seeing all of us ladies on here! Question, we're getting married in Cartagena on July 10th, 2009 and are needing a possible ceremony or reception site. We've rented out Casa Pombo entirely to use for one of the events, likely for the ceremony. But we're still wanting an impressive, outside reception venue and had thought of the clock tower. Our only concern is privacy and safety. We want to make sure there aren't tons of vendors approaching our guests or looming around empty dinner tables that may have cameras lying about. We of course will advise guests to watch their belongings but I know people will want to get up and dance without holding all their stuff. What have you learned about this reception idea in terms of those concerns? Where do you set up the dinner tables and dancing? Is it on the wall or on the ground below the clock? Do you have security to ensure only guests are allowed in? How much is it to rent? Can you have a live band? Dancers?

So happy you've found your "magical" spot! I'd love to hear more ; )

Hi ladies,
I'm new to this site, and we're also planning our wedding in Cartagena for the end of this year -it's great to finally find somewhere on the internet with information!! Our main issue right now seems to be budget - the prices we are getting quoted seem kind of outrageous for Colombia. I noticed a variety of budgets on this site, would anyone mind posting general info on their budgets for 1. food, 2. liguor 3. flowers? I noticed the post for $1000 for 100 people for liquor, how did you get this price? They are quoting us $3000 and claiming we cannot use outside vendors. We don't mind mixing national brands with American brands (actually we thought it'd be nice to have COLOMBIAN brands). Same deal for the food, they keep trying to send us latin fusion and nouveau cuisine when our whole point of doing it in Cartagena is to have everything Colombian. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much!

Maria,
I am having the same issues with prices, especially for drinks. Help on this subject would be very very helpful.

I'd rather work my budget around the prices rather than have a wedding planner work the prices around my budget!

I can plan for $100 a head but need to know what to expect from that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And thank you all for your help so far!

Hi,

We have been working with our wedding planner for most of this stuff and she has been very good about working within our budget and finding a better deal when we are not satisfied. This is super important for us because my fiancé and I are pretty young and we are going back to grad school next year but we still have about 80 guests. With the alcohol we are most likely buying it ourselves but will have bartenders as part of our catering service. This has not been a problem for us. I just got a quote for all the decorations, flowers, table sets etc and it looks like it will be around 1000 for everything. I am going down in April to check everything out so we will see. Also it is important to remember that Cartagena is not as cheap as other Latin American cities and that was a surprise to us as well. We have found some pretty creative solutions for our wedding with areas that were over our budget. And even though are wedding planner is great I have done a lot of research on my own and than have had her follow up with vendors. Hopefully this helps!!

Hey guys, good to see other people getting married in Cartagena. I am originally form there but I live in CA now, so the planning has been a little hard. I traveled there in January and went to see everyone so if you need any help let me know and I can give you some numbers.

Cartagena has become quite expensive as far as weddings go because it has become such a celebrity wedding spot. (and with reason, its the most beautiful city in the world :)

The hotels, air tickets and wedding stuff are a bit pricey, for latin American standards, but services, food etc is cheap. Massages are 15 for an hour or so. Regardless, it is still cheaper than having a wedding in the US. You can have more people for the same amounts, better food, better service and a hell of a better time.

Some of my vendors are:

I hired Cecilia Otero as a wedding coordinator for the day of. Shes young but has plenty experience. Her number is CECY OTERO- 320-5435297. She charged me less since it was just for the day of.

For decoration I hired Jairo, hes office is uuugly but he does awesome decoration and has the best prices. His number is 310-3568300 or 6648714 locally. You can also try William Baena, which is the absolute best, but he charges accordingly. His number is 6653989

For the cake I hired Elsy de Figueroa. I am not doing the normal cake, but mini shots and so. Her number is (57) (5) 6604486
You can also try ELIZABETH DIAZGRANADOS- POSTRES- 315-3631917
and Rosita Benedetti (yumm) 6651653

mh I have more but Im getting bored lol. Email me directly. Post pics of your weddings!!

Hello Everyone
I am trying to get some rough prices for the flowers (church and reception), how much did you guys spend? they quoted me USD 5000, but the reception is usd 3500 (for 100 people) so I am a bit suspicious that the flowers are more expensive than the venue and food. Not sure if this is normal prices for flowers in cartagena??
thank you

That's absurd. Who gave you that quote?? The most I got charged was USD $2500 and that was with all the toys. I have 200 people. Check to see what they are putting on there. Its possible there are some stupid charges like lighting, furniture and other things that make it more expensive. Look at the itemized quote. And if not, go with someone else.
William Baena is great, Jairo is great and inexpensive, floristeria Martha Luz as well. She has a facebook page where you can see pics. Let her know I sent you and she might give you a good price.

Hi!

For flowers and decoration I hired Andres Cortes. He did an AMAZING job, I loved it!!!

I had 150 people. He charged about USD 2,000 for the chuch's decoration and for the reception's decoration (including chivary chairs, linen table covers and napkins, big arrangements for the entrance, lamps for the trees and of course table arrangements) about USD 3000.

I have to say I tried first with William Baena, who is supposedly "the best in town". Well I was disappointed. He treated us like we were not special (maybe so for him, but for us its our only wedding!) When I told him I had seen a centerpiece that had a big candle with some flowers attached to it, he told me that he had actually done that arrangement, but that the candles were hard to find, so if I found them, he would do the centerpiece (wtf...). I never replied to him about that (which had happened about 6 months before the wedding). Guess what, the WEEK BEFORE he calls up and wants to "confirm" he will do the decoration! by then I was more than happy I had hired Andres!

Plus, Baena was more expensive than Andres... Andres truly made an effort: he even made the centerpiece as I had described it and took pictures of it months before, just to make sure that was what I wanted.

Hope this sheds some light about these two flower & decoration vendors in Cartagena!

Hi ladies,

I would like to share with you my quite amazing wedding experience. My husband is originally from Colombia and we were planning to get married in Cartagena as we both thought that it is the most beautiful place on earth to get married and we’d already found our wedding planner there - a friend recommended La Chiche and we fell in love with her as we met her.

Eventually we realized that it would be problematic for my family to come so far with such a short notice (we got engaged in February and got married in May and my family lives in Latvia) so we had to move the wedding to Miami. Chiche agreed to organize our wedding in Miami and it was fabulous! She came with her partner decorator Andres Cortes 2 days before the wedding and they did a wonderful job together. They brought many unique decorative objects from Cartagena, were working every night until 2am and provided great suppliers (eg. flowers, food, music) in Miami according to our budget.

So we got married on the beach with a beautiful sunset and an amazing Moroccan-themed setting which was also the destination of our honeymoon. We had 50 guests and everyone was dressed in white. It was like a dream come true! You can not imagine the energy Chiche has and her ideas were amazing! She had everything planned until the smallest detail and all we had to do is enjoy our beautiful wedding!

Hi Karen
I am also considering renting out casa pombo for everyone to stay and also I could hold the reception here? Did they give you any special price for renting the entire house? I need to stay for 4 days.
How big is the events room, does it have air conditioning?
thanks for your comments

Hello Margaux
I just wanted to check with you how was the santa clara hotel for the reception, the wedding planner I am working with told me the cost of renting the room was at least usd 20,000 for 100 people, not sure if this is reasonable prices for cartagena? I got other quotes from other places e.g: casa pestagua and it seems very expensive.
let me know what you think
thanks

20,000 a night for a 100 people comes out to about $200 a night a head, so those prices are actually quite reasonable for Santa Clara. The standard nightly rate I have found in luxury hotels are about $300. Casa Pombo gave me a good rate for my wedding, so you might wanna call them, but the rate will be more than 200 for sure, and they can only accomodate so many people. Theya re the same owners as Casa Pestagua, so they might be able to rent out both houses, but more than likely for more than that.
you can try Sofitel Santa Teresa, which is a bit more expensive,($307 or so) but they might negotiate the rate for that many people.
Hope it helps.

Hey Maria,

The cost of the salon at the Santa Clara $1300. You can choose what menu you want. We chose the 2nd cheapest and it was amazing. I think it came out to $45 a person without booze. They do add on the server charges and corking fees but our bill from the Santa Clara totalled 14k. Plus we had to buy our own liqour (we choice it this way bc it is cheaper), cake, decorations/flowers and music. Santa Clara is definitnley not the cheapest venue but you can make it work depending on your budget. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks! M

hi everyone! My fiance and I are getting married in Cartagena this July. I have family that lives there and we've been able to get by without having a planner - but the one thing that I'm concerned with is having the correct paper work. As 2 US citizens, what are the steps we need to take to ensure our marriage be legal in the US? On the flip side, what is the correct paper work to bring to Colombia with us?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Im not sure how to make it legal in the us. I believe you might have to go to colombian embassy to get the marriage certificate validated. As far as what to bring, it depends on the kind of union you are going to celebrate. Usually the basics are birth certificates, and for church paperwrk its all your sacrament(baptism, confirmation, etc.)
You will need to go to cartagena notary first to get all the needed paperwork for a civil union. Notaries over there are like lawyers, everyone needs to go through them to legalize anything. Ask ur famiky members to go and ask for requirements.

Hi Maritza
depends on the type of wedding, if you are having a catholic wedding (mine is catholic) you have to bring baptism, first comunion and confirmation certificates and you also have to do a marriage preparation course in your local church (mine is in London). Then you need to translate these certificates to spanish (via a notary) and show them to the local church in Cartagena. They have also asked us for a certificate showing that we haven't been married before which we get from the local council office (in london).
Hope this helps

He and his family are from Bogota, but I have a feeling I will be doing more of the wedding planning anyway (I have stronger feelings about what I want). We don't even have a date picked yet, I am still trying to figure out when would be the best time to go. I hear from November through April-ish is the dry season. When are you guys having yours?

She told me the best in Cartagena was la Chiche http://carmenceciliacayon.com/ See her webpage. She is awesome!!! Hello Margaux,

My fiance and I are planning to get married in Cartagena probably in March 2012. I came across your post and I had a few questions:

1.What exactly was included in the 175 per person. I know you listed this information, but mainly, I was wondering if this included music, decorations, etc.?
2. I got a crazy, high quote of like almost 500 dollars per person and this is WAY over our budget (we are expecting 40-50 people and have a budget of about 10,000 dollars). I wanted to know how was it working with La Chiche? I emailed her a few times but never heard from her again.

3. Did the Sofitel provide decorations, etc, or did you have to get that separately. If so, how much did you spend on decorations and music, if you don't mind me asking.

4. We received a budget of nearly 2200 dollars for photography and video and I noticed yours was about 1300. Who did you guys go with?

Sorry for bombarding you with all these questions, but we're supposed to fly out to Cartagena next month to meet with our wedding planner and I feel very overwhelmed with this prices!

Thanks,

Claudia

Hi All, my name is Suzie and I'm an Aussie girl marrying a Colombian boy. We're a bit behind the ball in wedding planning, but we're hoping to pull something together Colombian-style for July 2012.

I really don't know the first thing about planning a wedding. Despite being well into my 30s, I have attended very few weddings in my life so if my questions seem naive, it's because they are.

My first question is does anyone if there are venues in Cartagena that have a chapel? We're hoping to make this wedding as simple as possible.

Also suggestions on a venue for 80 - 100 people would be much appreciated.

Many thanks
Suzie

Suzie and others... I need some help please...

I am also an Aussie girl marring a Colombian boy... We also want to get married in Cartagena in 2012.

I have found organizing the entire planning process (from here) so very confusing and frustrating!

Here in Australia I am a Celebrant so we though we would have kind of head start but I am becoming desperate.

We hit a few hurdles (ie: there is no such this as an apostle in Aust or a 'singleness certificate' for example), so we tried to make the legalities easier and decided to legally get married here in Australia (quietly) and then celebrate (mass/ceremony and reception) in Cartagena. However, now no one in Cartagena seems to understand that although we will be legally married, we want the wedding celebration there... We were even told that we can't ware our wedding 'costumes' to the church as we will be legally married.

I really want my wedding here but I am beside myself trying to work it all out... Can anyone help???

Thank you,
Jess

Hi Jess, we've hired a wedding planner to deal with all this paperwork as it can be a nightmare. I'm not an expert, but I'm fairly certain you can rule out any kind of catholic ceremony if you're already married. At best you could attend a mass and ask the priest to say a blessing for your union. However I'm sure you could have some kind of non-religious ceremony at the reception venue or at another location, like the beach for example, if you'd like to say your vows in front of all your family and friends.

Greg, we've just started planning but we were given a ballpark quote of 15,000USD for 70 people including the wedding planner's fee, church, venue, photography, decoration etc. We're going to bring that down a little by asking friends to DJ and take photos (they're professionals). I hope that helps.
